Alan Wilkinson

Alan Wilkinson (born August 22, 1954 in Ilford , London ) is a British jazz and improvisation musician ( soprano , alto , baritone saxophone , bass clarinet , composition ).

Wilkinson received trumpet lessons from the age of eight; at the age of twelve he turned to the guitar. He first worked as a visual artist before becoming a professional musician. In 1975 he moved from Manchester to Leeds with the intention of obtaining a degree in art. After graduating, he began playing alto saxophone in the Crow group , which included drummer Paul Hession , with whom he would work frequently in the following years. In 1982 he met musicians such as Peter Brötzmann , Barry Guy , Fred Van Hove , Keith Tippett and Phil Wachsmann at a summer workshop in South Wales .

A little later, Wilkinson was given the opportunity to appear in the London improvisation scene. I.a. he played in a trio with Paul Hession and the pianist Akemi Kuniyoshi ; he also worked on numerous projects with drummer Steve Hubback . In 1983 he performed with Hession at the 10th Free Music Festival in Antwerp and at the Holland Art Initiative in Eindhoven. In the same year he co-founded the Termite Club in Leeds, a venue for experimental music and other art forms. 1985 Wilkinson became a member of the improvisation ensemble Ubiquity Orchestra ; from 1985 to 1988 he played with Steve Noble and Tony Moore , from 1987 to 1989 in a quartet with Willi Kellers , Christoph Winckel and Alex Maguire . In 1988 and 1993 Derek brought Bailey to his Company Week , which also included Steve Noble, Barre Phillips , Ernst Reijseger and Don Byron , Ikue Mori , Robyn Schulkowsky and Phil Minton respectively .

In 1989 Wilkinson formed a trio with bassist Simon H. Fell and Paul Hession, who worked together for a long time. In 1996 the trio recorded with Joe Morris and Derek Bailey at the Termite Festival . In the same year a concert with him, Fell, Brötzmann and Kellers was recorded. In 2000 recordings were made for the Ecstatic Peace! Label. During his career, Wilkinson also played with Hugh Metcalfe , Chris Corsano , Akira Sakata , Thurston Moore and Eddie Prévost ; He is also currently a member of the Norwegian quartet Akode, the trio Wilkinson / John Edwards / Steve Noble , the group of Mark Wastell and the ensemble The Founder Effect . He also runs the flimflam nightclub . In the field of jazz he was involved in 35 recording sessions between 1988 and 2016, most recently with the Emselble construct with Alexander Hawkins and Daniel Spicer .
