Mark Wastell

Mark Wastell (* 1968 ) is a British improvisation musician ( cello , also percussion , double bass ) and music producer.

Wastell received no music education at home and was initially a music fan before becoming a self-taught musician. Influenced by improvisation musicians such as John Stevens , Barry Guy , Phil Durrant and John Russell , he then dealt with compositions by Morton Feldman , John Cage , Luigi Nono , Helmut Lachenmann and Salvatore Sciarrino . He also occupied himself with the role of live electronics and musique concrète with David Tudor , Bernard Parmegiani and Iannis Xenakis . At first he played the cello and dealt with the tactile, textural and acoustic possibilities of the violoncello and bow .

In 1991 he made his first appearance on the London improvisation scene. From 1995 he worked in chamber music groups such as the Chris Burns Ensemble (with John Butcher, Rhodri Davies , John Russell, Matt Hutchinson), Derek Baileys Company (for example with Will Gaines, Simon H. Fell and Rhodri Davies), in Evan Parker's String Project (with Peter Cusack , Hugh Davies , Rhodri Davies, Phil Durrant, John Edwards , Kaffe Matthews, Marcio Mattos , John Russell) or The Sealed Knot (with Burkhard Beins and Rhodri Davies). Together with Beins, Ignaz Schick and Alessandro Bosetti he formed the Necessaire ensemble ; he was also a member of Tony Wren's Quatuor Accorde .

Wastell has also performed with musicians such as John Zorn , Keith Rowe , Peter Kowald , Roger Turner , Veryan Weston , Lol Coxhill , Mark Sanders , Axel Dörner , Hans Koch , Phil Minton , Max Eastley , Charlotte Hug , Clive Bell , Arild Andersen and Steve Beresford on. As a soloist he has performed at the Micro Classical Festival (London 1996), London Musician's Cooperative Festival (London 2000) and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (2000). In the group IST (with Simon H. Fell and Rhodri Davies) he is one of the pioneering groups in the development of the ultra-quiet aesthetic and appeared at the Total Music Meeting .

Since founding his label Confront Recordings in 1996, Wastell has also been a music producer. Together with Rhodri Davies he coordinates the All Angels concert hall .
