Julie Tippetts (born Driscoll, born June 8, 1947 in London , England ) is a British singer . Under her maiden name Julie Driscoll , she became internationally known in the late 1960s as a singer alongside Brian Auger .

Life

Julie Driscoll started out singing in London bars and clubs when she was 15. As the secretary of producer Giorgio Gomelsky , she was in contact with the group The Steampacket , in which Brian Auger and Rod Stewart played, among others . Gomelsky, who looked after Steampacket as a manager, was looking for a singer for the band and introduced Driscoll to the members of the group. After Steampacket broke up, she became the lead singer in the new band Brian Auger and the Trinity . Julie Driscoll had several successes with Trinity between 1966 and 1969 (e.g. This Wheel's on Fire, Road To Cairo, Let the Sunshine in, Season of the Witch, Indian Rope Man ).

In 1969 Driscoll left Trinity and switched to jazz . She married the jazz pianist Keith Tippett and has performed under her new name Julie Tippett ever since . She first worked in his bands Centipede and later Ovary Lodge . In 1974 she was involved in Robert Wyatt's concert at the Theater Royal Drury Lane , released her solo album Sunset Glow and was the singer on Carla Bly's album Tropic Appetites .

She later worked in the a cappella group Voice (together with the singer Maggie Nicols and the singers Phil Minton and Brian Ely ), and then worked again in the rock jazz area in the band Working Week and in other formations. In the early 1990s she was a member of the Dedication Orchestra . She has been working with Martin Archer since 2002 , with whom she has released five CDs as a duo (as of 2015).

Individual evidence

  1. Keith Tippett is actually called Tippetts , but shortened his name in the late 1960s because "Keith Tippett Sextet" was easier to pronounce.
  2. only ever contain recordings up to 1971
