The Steampacket was a British blues rock band formed in 1962 by Long John Baldry (vocals). After a few line-up changes, the band stabilized in 1965 with the other band members Rod Stewart (vocals and harmonica), Julie Driscoll (vocals), Brian Auger (keyboards), Vic Briggs (guitar), Richard Brown (bass) and Micky Waller (drums).

The band was supervised by Yardbirds manager Giorgio Gomelsky and played in the opening act for the Rolling Stones in 1965 . Since Stewart and Baldry had their own managers as solo artists, the planned recordings for a Steampacket album were delayed. Only demo recordings could be made.

The band's career with this line-up was short, it broke up in 1966. Most of the members became known to a larger audience in their later careers: Stewart joined Shotgun Express , Auger and Driscoll formed Trinity , Baldry toured with Bluesology , Waller joined the Jeff Beck Group , where Stewart eventually followed, and Briggs joined New Animals on.

For contractual reasons, no recording of The Steampacket appeared on the market. The demo recordings were only released as an LP in the 1970s under the title The First Supergroup , although this was not actually a supergroup , as the band members were still largely unknown at the time.
