Martin Archer

Martin Archer (* 1957 in Sheffield , Yorkshire ) is a British musician ( violin , saxophone , percussion , bass , electronics), composer and band leader in the field of jazz and improvised music .

Live and act

Archer began to play the saxophone as a teenager and was part of the improvised music scene in Sheffield from 1973, influenced as a saxophonist by role models such as Evan Parker and Anthony Braxton . In the early 80s he recorded his first LP with his formation Bass Tone Trap ; In 1983 he founded the Hornweb saxophone quartet that existed for ten years and released three albums. In 1988 Archer's first solo album, Wild Pathway Favorites , came into being, and in the same year his own record label, Discus , came into being. a. in a duo with Julie Tippetts . In 1993 he broke up the band Hornweb and turned to his network projects, in which he worked with synthesizers and sequencers in the studio. His way of working includes the recording of improvised solos and post-processing of the material by using electronic effects. This technique resulted in works such as Wild Pathway Favorites , Ghost Lily Cascade (1996) and Pure Water Construction (1999), on which he worked with bassist Simon H. Fell . In addition to his solo work, Archer also played in the Duo Ask with the guitarist John Jasnoch and in the formation Transient v Resident , an ambient electronics project with Chris Bywater. His current bands include Anthropology Band, Deep Tide Quartet, Orchestra of the Upper Atmosphere and Das Rad . In 2020 he released the album Anthropology Band .
