Hans Koch (woodwind)

Hans Koch (born September 4, 1948 in Biel ) is a Swiss woodwind player (clarinet, bass clarinet, double bass clarinet, soprano and tenor saxophone, electronics, sampling, sequencer) and composer who performs in the field of jazz and free improvisation . As a woodwind player he developed a very independent style.

After completing classical music studies at the conservatories in Biel and Zurich and an initial career as an orchestral musician, he has worked with musicians such as Werner Lüdi , Cecil Taylor , Fred Frith , Paul Lovens , Louis Sclavis , Evan Parker , Barry Guy , Barre Phillips , Joëlle Léandre since 1981 , Paul Bley , Jim O'Rourke , Fennesz , Anthony Coleman or Butch Morris played together. He worked regularly with the cellist Martin Schütz and the drummers Fredy Studer and Marco Käppeli , as well as with the Swiss composer Daniel Ott . He also forms a trio with Urs Leimgruber and Omri Ziegele . As a composer, he shaped the independent sound of the trio Koch-Schütz-Studer , known for their hard core game , which the filmmaker Peter Liechti portrayed in his film Hardcore Chambermusic . He also composed music for radio plays and films. With the inclusion of electronics, samples and computers, he has been expanding the sounds of his instruments since the 1990s.

Koch is one of the innovative improvising woodwind players in Europe. In 1985 he was awarded as the best soloist at the Lugano Jazz Festival. In 1986 he received the Culture Prize of the City of Biel, in 2002 the Music Prize of the Canton of Bern and repeatedly grants and grants from Swiss cantons.
