Paul Hession (musician)

Paul Hession (born September 19, 1956 in Leeds ) is a British jazz and improvisation musician ( drums , percussion )

Hession first learned the guitar and sang in the church choir; At the age of 15 he started playing the drums and then played in bands in the Leeds area. Since 1980 he has appeared in an improvisation trio with Alan Wilkinson and Pete Malham, then in a duo with Paul Rutherford and in band projects around George Haslam , and in a duo with Simon H. Fell . In 1986 he presented the solo album Giant Soft Drum . Since the same year he has been working in the European music scene, and later toured in several American countries. He played u. a. with Hans Peter Hiby , Peter Brötzmann , Derek Bailey and Otomo Yoshihide ( Good Cop Bad Cop ), Evan Parker , Lol Coxhill , Sunny Murray , Marshall Allen , Frode Gjerstad , Peter Kowald , Joe McPhee , Borah Bergman , Mick Beck , Petter Frost Fadnes and Nat Birchall . According to Tom Lord's discography , he was involved in 49 recording sessions between 1986 and 2013. He teaches at the School of Music at the University of Leeds . In 1986 and 1990 he was awarded the Jazz Bursaries of the British Arts Council.
