Manfred Hering

Manfred Curt Hering (born June 3, 1939 in Burgstädt ) is a German jazz saxophonist .

Hering first studied mathematics. He taught himself to play the saxophone and played in various dance orchestras from 1964 to 1968. From 1969 to 1970 he was in the Gerhard Stein combo . From 1971 to 1972 he studied alto saxophone and clarinet at the Friedrichshain Music School in East Berlin .

In the early 1970s he played in various groups of Manfred Schulze (including his wind quintet ), but also in the formations of guitarist Joe Sachse (1976/1977). In 1977 he toured with the Leipzig band Osiris . In addition, he worked with Ulrich Gumpert and became known for the first time in Germany through his participation on the FMP record The Old Song in a trio with Günter Sommer . He then performed in West Germany with the Ulrich Gumpert Workshop Band . In the mid-1980s he founded his own trio, which included the drummer Wolfram Dix and he also played with Schulze again. Hering brought various projects together with Irène Schweizer , Peter Kowald , John Tchicai , Rüdiger Carl and Paul Rutherford .

He lives in Wurzen and is a member of the Leipzig Bimbotown Orchestra , the Manfred Schulze wind quintet and occasionally plays in the central quartet .

According to the Jazz Rough Guide, Hering is one of the "most famous free improvisers of the former GDR ".
