The Gerhard Stein Combo was a jazz-oriented band founded in Leipzig in 1963 . Some of its members later became successful as soloists or in other bands.

Band history

The band was named after the tenor saxophonist Gerhard Stein, who had previously been a member of the Melodie dance and show orchestra. Other founding members included H.-J. Richter (trumpet), Manfred Schulze (baritone saxophone), Hans-Joachim Kretzschmar (piano), trombonist Günter Saalmann, bassist H.-J. Scheuer and the drummer Horst Holzapfel.

In the early stages, the band played beat music and became known for titles like Der Ober and Wasser im Vergaser . In 1966, the Gerhard Stein combo turned to jazz rock after a few line-up changes . From 1968 Manfred Schulze was the band leader. He was also responsible for compositions and arrangements. Franz Bartzsch began his musical career in 1969 as a bass guitarist and pianist in the Gerhard Stein Combo.

In 1970 the Gerhard Stein combo disbanded and was re-established in 1971 with a few line-up changes as the jazz band Praxis II . Gerhard Stein also belonged to this band. Schulze, Hering and other former members of the Gerhard Stein Combo were subsequently among the leading GDR free jazz musicians .
