Martin Mayes

Martin Mayes (born May 6, 1952 in Dumfries , Scotland ) is a Scottish horn player of avant-garde jazz and improvised music living in Italy .

Life

Mayes studied classical and contemporary music and came into contact with the Music Improvisation Company of Derek Bailey and Evan Parker during his student years . He played with numerous international ensembles, such as those of Radu Malfatti , Franz Koglmann , Georg Graewe , Roberto Ottaviano , Cecil Taylor , Hannes Zerbe or together with Theo Jörgensmann in the trio of John Lindberg , as well as the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and the Italian Instabile Orchestra . In addition to his projects of improvised and electronic music, Mayes also deals with medieval and early classical music, for example with the traditional repertoire of the French horn instrument, whose history and character he studied in detail. All these different facets of his artistic personality resulted in his first solo album Unique Horn in 1997. Mayes lives in Turin .
