The Max Brewer Prize has been awarded annually by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation FVS since 1993. Individuals, institutions or associations who have made a contribution to cultural, scientific or social life in Hamburg will receive the prize, which is endowed with 20,000 euros (as of 2020). In 2020, the prize went to (Northern) Italy as an exception to send a message of European solidarity in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic .

In connection with the Max Brewer Prize, the Alfred Toepfer Foundation FVS awards three grants for European school hiking every year . The scholarships, endowed with 4,000 euros, are given to school classes in Hamburg who want to hike beyond Germany's borders.

This prize is not identical to the sponsorship prize of the Mayor-Dr.-hc-Max-Brauer-Stiftung for the promotion of talented students , which has been awarded by the Hamburger Hochbahn since 1961 for theses on the topic of local public transport .
