Jürgen Flimm
Jürgen Flimm (born July 17, 1941 in Gießen , Hessen ) is a German director , actor , artistic director and university lecturer . From 2010 to March 31, 2018 he was artistic director of the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden .
Life
Jürgen Flimm grew up in the Cologne districts of Mülheim and in Dellbrück , Thielenbruch settlement, as the son of a general practitioner who also worked at the theater. This allowed Flimm to attend performances with his father free of charge. After graduating from the Deutzer Gymnasium Schaurtestrasse , Jürgen Flimm studied theater studies , literature and sociology at the University of Cologne . He gained his first practical experience at the Studiobühne Köln , an institution of the university. On February 8, 1963, he took part in the Stage for Sensual Perception - KONZIL , a cultural forum founded as part of the “Studium Universale” of the University of Bonn, and participated in the world premiere of the work BEWEGUNGEN II 24 '1963 by the composer Johannes Fritsch (Co -Director, pantomime). Jürgen Flimm began his professional theater career in 1968 as assistant director at the Münchner Kammerspiele . From 1971 onwards his own productions were played. In 1972 he became director at the National Theater Mannheim , 1973 senior director at the Thalia Theater Hamburg . From 1979 to 1985 Flimm was director of the Schauspielhaus in Cologne and from 1985 to 2000 director of the Thalia Theater. As the successor to founding director Gerard Mortier , he headed the RuhrTriennale from 2005 to 2007 . After the death of the designated successor director Marie Zimmermann , he took over the management of the Ruhrtriennale together with Jürgen Krings for 2008 and acts as artistic director.
His operatic activities began in 1978 with a production of Luigi Nono's Al gran sole carico d'amore in Frankfurt . Since then he has worked at many opera houses such as La Scala in Milan , the Metropolitan Opera , the Royal Opera House Covent Garden , the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden , the Hamburg State Opera , the Zurich Opera House , the Bayreuth Festival and the Salzburg Festival .
Jürgen Flimm directed the Salzburg Festival from 2006 to 2010. From 2009 he has been an advisor to the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, of which he was director from 2010 to 2018.
As a television director, Flimm was active in two episodes of the series A Heart and a Soul and in the documentary Who Comes Too Late - The Politburo Experiences the German Revolution (1990). He also appeared in various productions, for example in two Tatort episodes.
Jürgen Flimm was a professor at Harvard University , New York University and professor at the University of Hamburg .
Flimm is evangelical faith. He told Chrismon magazine that to him faith means tolerance, patience, forbearance; while “bad sermons, uninspired pastors, bigotry and liturgical celebrations” kept him at a distance.
family
In 1969 Flimm married his colleague Inge Jansen . He has been married to the film producer Susanne Ottersbach-Flimm since 1990. Flimm's brother Dieter, who was two years older, was an architect, musician and stage designer.

- In 1990 he was awarded the Dramatiker Union's Silver Leaf for his services .
- In 1991 he received (together with Martin Wiebel , Cordt Schnibben , Claudia Rohe , Hans-Christian Blech and Dirk Dautzenberg ) the Adolf Grimme Prize with silver for "Whoever comes too late .... The Politburo is experiencing the German revolution"

Jürgen Flimm is a member of the Free Academy of the Arts Hamburg , the Academy of Arts (Berlin) of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts , the German Academy of Performing Arts , was President of the German Stage Association from 1999 to 2013 and is a member of the board of trustees of Rudolf Augstein - Foundation .
