Julia Stemberger (born January 29, 1965 in Vienna ) is an Austrian actress .

Life

Julia Stemberger is the daughter of the actress Christa Schwertsik and the tropical medicine specialist Heinrich Stemberger . Her younger sister Katharina Stemberger is also an actress.

In addition to her acting training with Dorothea Neff , she completed acting and singing training with Eva Zilcher and learned ballet and jazz dance. She also plays cross and recorder and piano .

With her film debut immediately after graduating from high school , she became known to a broad public at the age of 19 with the lead role in the film Herzklopfen .

She celebrated her first successes in the theater as Paula in Der Raub der Sabinerinnen at the Vienna Volkstheater (1986 to 1987). The following year she played in Stephan Bruckmeier's production of Wolfgang Bauer's Magic Afternoon ( Theater Gruppe 80 ) and the youth in Der Bauer als Millionär (directed by Jürgen Flimm ) at the Salzburg Festival . This was followed by roles in Das Mädl aus der Vorstadt (1991, director: Jürgen Flimm) and as Helene Altenwyl in Der Schwierige (1990/1991, director: Jürgen Flimm). In 1988 she first played as Jessica in Peter Zadek's production of The Merchant of Venice at the Burgtheater in Vienna . It was there that she performed as Desdemona in Othello under George Taboris' direction in 1989/1990 . Further engagements took her to the Salzburg Festival in Antonius and Cleopatra (director: Peter Stein ), as Eliza in My Fair Lady at the Vienna Volksoper and other stages in Vienna, Hamburg and Munich. In spring 2009 she was seen in the rock musical Spring Awakening at Ronacher in Vienna . In 2012 she played the title role in a stage adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina at the Lower Austrian Festival Reichenau . In 2014 she embodied the genia there in Schnitzler's Das weite Land .

In 1998 she appeared on stage at Vienna's English Theater in the play Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune by Terrence McNally.

In addition, Julia Stemberger played in a number of television and cinema films, especially in Austria and Germany, and she also appeared in various TV series in the USA. In 1990 she received the French Acting Award for Erwin and Julia . There was repeated collaboration with Dieter Wedel ( Der Schattenmann , 1996; Der König von St. Pauli , 1998) and above all Xaver Schwarzenberger ( Tonino and Toinette , 1994; Andreas Hofer - Die Freiheit des Adlers , 2001; Eine Liebe in Afrika , 2002; Anna's homecoming , 2002; My beautiful daughter , 2004). In 2008 she played the main role of the teacher Katja Stein in the television series Die Stein .

In 1997 she married the violinist Christian Altenburger . Their daughter is the actress Fanny Altenburger . From 1999 to 2005 the couple were jointly responsible for the musical and artistic direction of the Mondseetage , a festival for chamber music that takes place every year in Mondsee , Upper Austria . In 2007 they got divorced.

In addition to her work as a theater and film actress, Stemberger has been designing stage programs together with the ensembles Die Österreich Salonisten and the string quartet Sonare for a number of years , in which they mainly use humor from the works of writers such as Alfred Polgar , Karl Kraus , Anton Kuh , Isabel Allende , Wladimir Kaminer , Umberto Eco reads.
