action

After years of oppression by Bavarian rule in Tyrol, the innkeeper and captain of the Passeier Schützen, Andreas Hofer, and the Capuchin Father Joachim Haspinger travel to Vienna as a diplomatic delegation of the Tyroleans to meet the Austrian Archduke Johann . Since all rights in Tyrol have been suspended, they want to ask the Archduke to work for a change in things for the better. The Habsburg promises to support Tyrol. As a result, Haspinger now wants to use all possible force against the enemy. He also convinced Andreas Hofer of his plans, and he finally initiated the uprising against Bayern.

The occupiers are surprised by the strength of the rebellious Tyrolean farmers. That's why they suffer one defeat after another at the beginning. The Tyroleans succeed three times in driving the hated Bavarian and French troops out of their own country. Since Austria lost the war against France again, Tyrol was again awarded to Bavaria in October 1809.

Because of this, Hofer wants to admit defeat. Haspinger has something against it and puts him under pressure. He tries to convince him that the peace news is fake. Hofer is torn by his feelings and finally decides to continue the fight.

The peace treaty means that Napoleon I has additional troops available for the war with the Tyroleans. It only takes until the end of the year before the Tyrolean uprising is finally put down at the last Bergisel Battle. Many of the farmers are killed, villages and farms are destroyed and there is famine across the country.

Hofer, who is hiding in an alpine pasture with his faithful Kajetan Sweth , is betrayed by his comrade Franz Raffl for a high bounty. He and his family are arrested. Hofer is imprisoned in Mantua and soon afterwards sentenced to death by shooting by Napoleon. This judgment was carried out on February 20, 1810. The execution squad fired the volley at Hofer. However, there is no fatal hit among them, so he stands up again and the soldiers mocked how badly they would shoot. Then he is executed by the sergeant at close range with a shot.

Historical background

In 1805 Napoleon I succeeded in defeating the Russian and Austrian troops in the Battle of Austerlitz . On December 26th of the same year the Peace of Pressburg was passed. As a result, Austria had to cede the state of Tyrol to Bavaria, which was allied with Napoleon. All rights of the Tyroleans were suspended. This also included the land dragonfly from 1511. The Tyroleans were obliged to serve six years in Napoleon's army. In addition, the Bavarians abolished the name “Tirol”. The Tyrolean customs were not spared either; Pilgrimages , processions , weather bells and midnight masses on Christmas Eve were banned. All of the monasteries were closed and their entire inventory was sold. These proceeds flowed into the Bavarian state treasury. This resulted in unrest and discontent.
