action

The focus is on five women who couldn't be better off in their supposedly ideal world of prosperity in the Vienna suburbs. They have lucrative marriages, wear expensive clothes, and enjoy a life of luxury. But when suddenly one of them is shown penniless at the door by her husband, reality catches up with her. Gradually the façade of the other women is beginning to crumble too, and they fear that it might be the same for them. Corruption, intrigue and a lot of corpses in the basement shape everyday life in the Viennese suburbs. While their husbands are involved in illegal business, the women prepare a financial break.

First season

The series begins with a scene from the funeral of the Ministerialrat Josef Steinberg. In the form of a retrospective, the course of events is then described which led to the violent death of the Ministerialrat. Here jealousy, hatred and greed are the motives that many of those involved harbor against the Ministerial Council. On the one hand, he wants to separate from his wife Waltraud and at the same time legalize the relationship with his lover Nico. Nico is blackmailed by Francesco in connection with his former relationship with Minister Schnitzler. The Ministerialrat also endangers a secret plan of his friends who want to enrich themselves with property speculations: Steinberg is responsible for the environmental impact assessment of a motorway project . The real estate agent Georg Schneider got the inside information about the planned motorway through his intimate relationship with the minister. Ultimately, however, the minister also gets wind of his lover's business and sees the environmental impact assessment as an opportunity to burst the bubble. At the funeral of Ministerialrat Josef Steinberg, the speculators' wives are arrested because the contracts are in their names. In addition, Maria Schneider is suspected of having shot Steinberg. His real murderer, Minister Schnitzler, is traded as a candidate for chancellor. In addition, the long affair between Maria's 16-year-old son Simon and Waltraud comes to light and the fact that both are expecting a child. In the final scene of the first season, Maria tries to murder her husband Georg.

Second season

At the beginning of the season, Maria, Nicoletta and Waltraud fell out. While Waltraud Maria is still resentful that she is allowed to manage the inheritance of her deceased husband as Simon's mother, Nico sits in prison, abandoned by her friends. In addition, it surprisingly turns out that not only Waltraud, but also Maria is pregnant, which she initially does not accept. Thanks to the negotiating skills of her lawyer Tina, Nico is released from prison for a heavy fine. However, since she has accumulated a large mountain of debt, she accepts Tina’s offer to run her newly acquired restaurant. Meanwhile, Caro and Hadi are in a marital crisis. You feel compelled to see a sex therapist. As it turns out later, Hadi has had an affair with his ex-wife and Georg's sister Sylvia for a long time, which is why Caro separates from him and undresses. Georg was able to survive Maria's attempted murder and has to sit in a wheelchair for the time being, which is why the Schneider family moves into a new, barrier-free house. Sabine made a career leap, she is in an advisory position in the Ministry of the Environment and continues to forge plans to have Hadis, Georgs and Bertram's machinations exposed. In addition, she is now with Helga, who is also very interested in the investigation work. After the birth of Waltraud's daughter Josephine, she initially began a pseudo relationship with Joachim Schnitzler, who she strongly suspected was Josef's murderer. Schnitzler also has Nico, who has started a relationship with Jörg Pudschedl, under suspicion. Maria's child also has the color of his skin because she had an affair with the dark-skinned callboy Timo. Georg, who knew from the beginning that he could not be the father, initially hides this. In the final scene of the second season, Nicoletta shoots Jörg Pudschedl's gun at Waltraud and Joachim's wedding. The ball missed him, but Walli was hit by a ricochet.

Third season

After lying in artificial deep sleep for months due to her gunshot wound, Waltraud wakes up again in the presence of Nico, Maria and Caro. Jörg Pudschedl, from whose service weapon the bullet came, is meanwhile in custody, although Nico actually shot Joachim Schnitzler. Vanessa Schwarz, the new member of the Vorstadtweiberquintett, arrives at the USB stick that contains the surveillance video with which Schnitzler was convicted for the murder of Otto Strobl. After Timo, the father of Maria's son David, has to go to jail due to an intrigue by Georg, Maria decides to finally divorce Georg. But that's not all, she goes into hiding in India with the help of the other suburban women and Georg's mother Anna, and through a trick Georg is suspected of murder, but gets away with it and David and Anna go to Maria in India. The marriage of Caro and Hadrian is in the basement after Sylvia's suicide, so that Caro begins an affair with the nurse Milo Albertin on the one hand and Hadi with Vanessa on the other. However, both relationships break up, but it still means the end of the marriage. Hadrian begins an affair with Dr. Barbara Bragana and Caro confess to their daughter Lea, whom she gave to her sister as a teenager, that she is their mother.

Meanwhile, Simon lives with Josefine at Walli's and plays with the cleaning lady Zorica, whom he pays for it, a love affair to make Walli jealous. However, Zorica falls in love with Simon. However, he separates from her, and a new love begins between him and Waltraud. Joachim Schnitzler comes under distress because Bruno Pudschedl found out about his murder of Josef Steinberg.

However, Bruno is murdered by Schnitzler, who then roams through Vienna as a psychologically unstable ticking time bomb, where he also shoots the journalist Dieter West. At Rudi Bragana's birthday party, he finally takes hostage, but is arrested for multiple murders before a bloodbath. The final scene shows how Caro, Nico and Walli, having survived the shock of the hostage drama, roam the Viennese nightlife again to celebrate.

Fourth season

The three suburban women happened upon Anatol's nephew, who mistook them for a cleaning team and asked them to clean up the nocturnal traces of an alleged party. In doing so, they come across a bloody carpet that suggests a crime and that makes Waltraud feel guilty because she believes that on this carpet she knocked down her lover and possibly killed her. In fact, Sonia Clementi's diabetic father died there due to an act of omission by Sonia. When removing the corpse, the nephew got into problems and had to put it back at the scene of the crime, where he was watched by Georg, who slept there because he wanted to sell the house as a broker. Both father Moreno and Milo were interested in this. After Georg urgently needs money and realizes the connections, he tries to force Milo to make a payment. When he turns the tables, he forges the signature on the sales contract to get money from the Moreno family. In the course of this it becomes apparent that the apartment was not intended for Sonia, but for her half-sister, the real daughter of Mr. Moreno, who is from Germany and is supposed to live permanently in Vienna.

reception

On ORF eins, the first season had an average of 856,000 viewers, which corresponds to a total market share of 28 percent on average. The fifth episode achieved the highest audience rating with 984,000 viewers. In ORF TVthek , the first ten episodes with 1.2 million views (until March 8, 2015) were the most successful fictional series since the platform was launched. The series sparked controversy in the Austrian media landscape after its premiere. While ORF television director Kathrin Zechner described the series as “entertaining, high quality Austrian fiction geared towards closeness to the audience” and Isabella Wallnöfer of the press praised the dialogues as “more toxic than the US model Desperate Housewives ”, Maciej Tadeusz felt Palucki of the online edition of the same newspaper sees the characters as clichéd and not very differentiated and the humor as flat. Guido Tartarotti criticized the figures in the Kurier as being caricature.

The judgment of the German media was mixed. Ursula Scheer from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote: “You would have to be very patient before the corruption plot and the game of who picks up on whom are halfway interesting.” And Marie Schmidt said at the time : “It does one is a bit sorry for formidable actors like Nina Proll, Simon Schwarz and Bernhard Schir. And especially about the character face of Gerti Drassl, which occasionally turns into a sugary doll's grimace, as if she wanted to pull the luxury female fuss into the grotesque. "

The characterization of the series in the weekly magazine Focus turned out to be more balanced : “The series was initially criticized as a stupid cliché thrower full of clumsy humor. Nonetheless, Vorstadtweiber is the most successful ORF production in the past 20 years. In Austria it achieved dream rates of almost 30 percent market share. In Germany, an average of four million people watched the first season, the series was a hit with young audiences. ”And it goes on to say:“ The author doesn't care much about political correctness. He does not design modern women who manage their lives independently and confidently. The suburban babes lie, intrigue and play so wrong that they literally vomit with self-disgust. Completely suddenly, the action or dialogue always takes an unexpected direction. That is what makes the series so attractive. The language is vulgar, coarse and flat. And then again wonderfully absurd and all the more truthful dialogues develop. "

When it was first broadcast on ARD, the first episode achieved an above-average market share of 9.3% among 14 to 49 year olds; it was the most watched program among the general public. However, the ratings sank later, and the ARD placed the second and third season in the late-night program. After the show also performed poorly on the late slot, Das Erste stopped broadcasting the fourth season.

Awards and nominations

Five actors (Gerti Drassl, Maria Köstlinger, Proschat Madani, Juergen Maurer and Simon Schwarz) were nominated for a Romy in 2015 . The producers of the series, Oliver Auspitz , Andreas Kamm and Kurt J. Mrkwicka , were awarded the Akademie-Romy in the category of best TV film producer . Gerti Drassl was honored with the German Actor Award in 2017 as best actress in a comedic role for her performance in Vorstadtweiber .

Controversy

In the course of the broadcast of the first season there were several complaints to the Austrian media authority KommAustria . In January 2015, for example, it became known that allegations were being investigated that labeling obligations had been violated. At the time, ORF rejected the suspicion of product placement , and after examining the complaint, KommAustria also saw no violation of advertising regulations.

In the sixth episode of the first season, the ORF removed a dialogue scene in which Heinz-Christian Strache , the party leader of the FPÖ , is described as gay. When it became known that the corresponding part of the dialogue in the version for the hearing impaired could be read in the subtitle, Strache complained to the media authority. The complaint was dismissed two months later on the grounds that no such claim had been made.
