Harry Meisel is depressed and decides to put an end to his life. When he wants to jump into the Danube , Axel Mozart saves his life. The incorrigible pessimist Meisel and the eternal optimist Mozart become friends.

Together they run a wine tavern in a fantastic location in Vienna (green belt) , the restaurant “Zur Zukunft” , which Meisel previously ran with his now divorced wife, and whose specialty is Wiener Schnitzel . It is closed again and again in between, gas and electricity are turned off due to unpaid bills. The owner of a well-located crypt, which he affectionately calls a “second home” , is prevented from making various suicide attempts by the incorrigible optimist Mozart in the course of the series. Mozart is accompanied by two pretty ladies who feel connected to the part-time unemployed vet. After all, Meisel even sold his crypt in order to use the proceeds to restore the economy. In the end, after a meat scandal through no fault of their own, the taming of a lion, an incorrectly inserted pacemaker and police interrogation, the two protagonists are faced with an even larger heap of rubble than before. Mozart's optimistic comment: It can only go up!
