Elly Wright

Elly Wright (actually Petronella Vasicek , * 1940 in Vienna ) is an Austrian jazz singer and music teacher .

Life

Elly Wright began her career as a singer and dancer; In the 1960s she lived in the southern United States, then in Hamburg and Berlin, always with stays in Vienna. In Berlin she had classical singing lessons with Hope Foy and attended jazz courses at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. In 1975 she married the saxophonist Leo Wright , with whom she formed the formation Leo Wright & Friends , u. a. with Rolf Ericson , Aladár Pege , formed. In 1978 the Wrights toured with Etta Cameron , Rudolf Dašek East German musicians around Wolfram Dix , Hannes Zerbe and Joe Sachse through what was then the GDR .

In 1981 she returned to Vienna and worked there first with the Mexas group and with Frank Mantooth , in Germany with Larry Porter , Lee Harper and Paul Grabowsky . In 1985 she recorded her debut album Lady Champagne - accompanied by the Albert Mair Trio . She also taught jazz singing at the Franz Schubert Conservatory in Vienna and in various workshops. With the formation The Wright Singers , the former singing students Inge Pischinger and Annemarie Höller, the live album A Rainbow 'Round Your Soul was created in 1996 , recorded in Jazzland Vienna. In 2002 she received the Medal of Honor from the Federal Capital Vienna .
