Lee Harper

Wilson Leroy "Lee" Harper (born February 27, 1945 in LeJeune , North Carolina ; † November 10, 2010 in Salzburg ) was an American modern jazz trumpeter .

Harper was tutored on the trumpet by his father and performed with local bands. He studied political science at Washington State University until 1967 and then worked in urban planning . From 1971 he concentrated on making music and in the same year moved to Europe, where he first worked in Paris with Christian Escoudé , Boulou Ferré and Siegfried Kessler . Between 1973 and 1979 he was part of the Munich jazz scene and played with Hermann Breuer , Charly Antolini , Dusko Goykovich , Bobby Jones , Mal Waldron and Boško Petrović . In 1979 Erich Kleinschuster brought him into the ORF big band (of which he was a member until 1988).

In addition, he has worked from Salzburg since 1985 as an arranger for numerous other radio orchestras. He has also performed with Thad Jones , Al Porcino , Joe Haider , Leo Wright , Hans Koller , Karl Ratzer , the Conexion Latina , Sal Nistico , Rudi Wilfer , Caterina Valente , Elly Wright , Jenny Evans and Allan Praskin . He performed with his own trio and quartet and occasionally with his own medium-sized formation and with Barbara Dennerlein . In addition, Harper worked as a music teacher, in particular for the State Conservatory in Klagenfurt . He died of a heart attack.
