Shahan R. Berberian

Shahan R. Berberian ( Armenian Շահան Ռ. Պէրպէրեան , born January 1, 1891 in Istanbul , Ottoman Empire , † October 9, 1956 in Paris ) was an Armenian philosopher , composer , educator , psychologist , esthete and writer . He was the son of the pedagogue Retheos Berberian , younger brother of the composer Onnig Berberian and father of the poet Mannig Berberian and the painter Artavazd Berberian .

Life

Shahan Berberian was born in Istanbul in 1891. Shortly thereafter, his parents Retheos Berberian and Zaruhi Panosyan fled together with his brother Onnig to Geneva , Switzerland , to escape the massacres of the Armenians in 1894-1896 under Sultan Abdülhamid II .

Back in Istanbul, Shahan began his education at the Berberian school that his father had founded in Kadikoy , an Asian part of the city. At that time he began with violin lessons, but he gave up the "unbearable instrument" very quickly. Allegedly he threw the violin in the fireplace. Instead, he took piano lessons. This attempt was also unsuccessful.

Shahan Berberian graduated from school in 1906. As a fifteen-year-old young man, he taught literature and science at the Berberian School. In 1908 he went to Paris to study at the Sorbonne and the Collège de France . He attended lectures in philosophy and metaphysics with Henri Bergson , psychology with Georges Dumas and sociology with Émile Durkheim .

In 1911 Berberian returned to Istanbul to lead the Berberian School as principal. As a result, he was unable to finish his dissertation on “The Pathological Method in Psychology”. In addition to his duties at school, he was involved in the cultural life of the Armenian community in the city. During this time a deep friendship developed with Komitas Vardapet .

In 1918, Shahen Berberian was elected head of the Central Committee of the Armenian Teachers' Association and a member of the Central Education Council. Berberian was instrumental in founding the Armenian arts center Hayardun , of which he later became chairman. He wrote essays in Armenian newspapers in Istanbul, especially in Vosdan. In 1922, together with Kegham Kavafyan , Vahan Tekeyan , Hagop Oshagan and Gostan Zarian, he founded the monthly art and literature magazine Partsravank (Kloster am Berg).

Berberian fell ill during a summer vacation while visiting his son Artavazd in the French capital Paris and died there on October 9, 1956.
