Kegham Kavafian

Kegham Kavafian or Keğam Kavafyan ( Armenian Գեղամ Գավաֆեան ; * 1888 in Istanbul , Ottoman Empire , † November 30, 1959 in Switzerland ) was an Ottoman architect . He designed the construction plans for the Süreyya Opera House in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul.

biography

Kegham Kavafian was born in Istanbul to Armenian parents . He received his primary education at the Surp Haç Tbrevank School in Üsküdar . He continued his education at the Berberian Academy. In 1910 he graduated from the École des Ponts ParisTech in Paris .

After returning to Istanbul, he began designing and renovating numerous buildings in the city. At the suggestion of the Istanbul MP, Süreyya İlmen, Kegham Kavafian became the architect of the Süreyya Opera House, the construction of which was completed in 1927. The Opera House is considered to be the first musical theater in the Anatolian part of Istanbul. Kavafian also renovated the damaged Armenian Mhitaryan School in the Pangaltı district of Istanbul in 1917 . From 1917 to 1927 he was rector of the Getronagan Lyceum in Armenia . In 1922 he founded the monthly art and literary magazine Partsravank ("Monastery on the Mountain") together with Schahan Berberian , Vahan Tekeyan , Hagop Oshagan and Gostan Zarian . Kegham Kavafian died at the age of 71 during therapy in Switzerland.
