Veterinarian Dr. Josef Heiss, bar owner Andreas and divorce lawyer Roman are best friends. Together they own a mountain hut in the forest, where they can find shelter with their loved ones. Andreas and Roman are single and Josef is now becoming one too: his wife Barbara is leaving him because he has constantly cheated on her and is not only esoteric, but also has a dolphin tic. Most recently, he undertook a mass adoption of captured dolphins. That alone leads to the fact that he goes empty-handed at the divorce date. Among other things, Barbara is entitled to the apartment and the shared car. Josef moves in with the dolphin sculptures and incense sticks at Roman, who was also his divorce lawyer. Within a very short time Josef brings Roman to the brink of a nervous breakdown. Roman is no longer allowed to smoke, women are forbidden to visit and the large apartment will soon be populated by dolphin sculptures. Since Josef has also given up his veterinary practice, Roman now has to share the apartment with a ferret and a horde of gerbils . After a few months, he accepted the condition, especially since Josef takes care of him like a mother.
Andreas starts an affair with Barbara, who soon becomes pregnant. Josef is horrified and breaks off contact with Andreas with Roman. The baby is born and given the name Elisabeth. Josef had long wanted a child with Barbara and had even considered adoption. Now he wants to start a small family with Roman and renews his application for adoption. The officer in charge, Ms. Zander, believes that Josef is homosexual.
When Barbara has to go to the cure because she has sore muscles while carrying the girl all the time, Andreas asks Josef and Roman for help. Barbara has announced that she will leave him, but Andreas does not want to lose his child. Roman should ask for him from Barbara. He learns from her that Andreas has not slept with her since she became pregnant and that she is frustrated that she wants the separation. When Roman comes back to Josef and Andreas, he is wearing his underpants upside down. A little later, Andreas sees Barbara and Roman kissing. Together with Josef, he now locks Roman out of his apartment. At first, Josef and Andreas also try to keep Elisabeth with them, but Barbara threatens a lawsuit and so they surrender the girl when Barbara comes back from the cure. When Elisabeth doesn’t get quiet in the evening, Barbara calls the two men for help. Both of them bring the child to sleep by playing the flute.
The next day, Mrs. Zander is at the door and wants to see how the "couple" Josef and Andreas live. She is satisfied with the apartment and both men are given a little boy for trial care. One day Barbara asks Josef for an interview. She understands her ex-husband better now, has discovered her own esoteric streak and also adopted a dolphin. Together they drive to the mountain hut that Josef actually wants to set on fire, but Barbara suggests using the hut's mattress store. At the end, all three friends sit at a table with Barbara and the children and prepare dinner.

For the film service was man, oh man, oh man! a "comedy that is turbulent to the point of being confusing and that seeks to question the traditional understanding of roles, but largely only uses clichés."
