Götz Spielmann (born June 11, 1961 in Wels , Austria ) is an Austrian film director and screenwriter. He is one of the most important contemporary Austrian filmmakers .

Live and act

Götz Spielmann was born in Wels and grew up in Vienna . He attended the Wasagasse grammar school in the ninth district of Vienna. He started writing scripts and directing short films while still at school. In 1978 a short film by him that he had made in a school project was shown on television for the first time. After graduating from high school, Spielmann went to Paris for a few months. After returning in 1980, he began his studies at the Vienna Film Academy in the subjects Directed by Harald Zusanek and Axel Corti . He graduated in 1987 with the thesis Vergiss Sneider! for which he received the special prize of the Max Ophüls Festival in 1988 .

Spielmann made his feature film debut in 1990 as director of the drama Erwin and Julia with Heinz Weixelbraun and Julia Stemberger in the leading roles. In 1993 he won the Vienna Film Prize at the Viennale for his film The Neighbor .

The films Die Fremde (2000) and Antares (2004) were Austria's submissions for an Oscar nomination in the category Best Foreign Language Film . Antares has been shown at over thirty international festivals.

In 2006 he founded his own film production company , Spielmannfilm, together with Sandra Bohle . In the same year Spielmann began to work for the theater. On January 5, 2007, Imperium, his first play, premiered in the Linz Kammerspiele of the Landestheater Linz .

In 2008 Spielmann presented the unconventional drama Revanche , which premiered at the 2008 Berlinale and won the Art Cinéma Award and the Europa Cinemas label . In film reviews, the film is often referred to as Spielmann's best directing performance to date and one of the best films shown at the Berlinale. In the same year the film was selected as an official Austrian contribution for a nomination for the best foreign language film at the 2009 Academy Awards.

On January 22nd, 2009 it was announced that Revanche, along with Die Klasse , Der Baader Meinhof Complex , Departures and Waltz with Bashir, had been nominated for the Oscar 2009 for best foreign language film .

On February 11, 2010, Spielmann's play Imperium with Peter Simonischek in the role of the brothel owner Wessely premiered at the Graz Schauspielhaus . Spielmann himself directed.

Spielmann is married and lives in Vienna with his wife and daughter. Until 2010 he was a board member of the Austrian Film Director Association . Götz Spielmann has been leading the script class at the Vienna Film Academy since 2011 .
