The next day, Pavlik is in a bad mood and brutally expels a customer from his shop. After Mrs. Smekal is buried, her son Herbert appears, who thinks his mother's apartment is old-fashioned. When Pavlik starts talking to the young Smekal, the argument between the two escalates because Herbert didn't take care of his old mother, and Pavlik then calls him a rascal . The warden tells him her name is Catalle on the show . In the cabin, Pavlik is ravished by Michaela's nudity. Little Agnes often comes to Pavlik's shop, who is taciturn at first and to whom he also lends reading books. Mr. Pavlik continues to pursue Michaela, interferes in her affairs, even proposes to her and wants to bequeath his money to her. Michaela, however, reacts energetically and negatively. When Michaela visits Pavlik, he tells her to undress. She does this too, but then has had enough and no longer wants to see Pavlik. Pavlik means well to her, because in Pavlik's opinion Herbert Smekal is incapable of looking after little Agnes. In addition, Herbert gambled away 20,000 schillings in a syndicate. Michaela and Herbert are now broke. In order to earn money, Michaela now works as a prostitute. Pavlik comes to her for money, and Michaela thinks he's crazy. Herbert gets wind of Pavlik's fortune. Pavlik and Herbert go to the park at night, where Herbert tries to squeeze the money out of Pavlik. Pavlik draws a pistol and shoots Herbert.
