The International Festival of the Munich Film Schools , also known as Filmschoolfest Munich , is one of the world's most important young film festivals. Over 3,500 films have already been shown. The 39th festival took place from November 17 to 23, 2019. The 40th festival is planned for November 15-21, 2020.

The festival was founded in 1981 by Wolfgang Längfeld (1937–2012), at the time professor at the University of Television and Film Munich , and has taken place annually ever since. The organizer is the Internationale Münchner Filmwochen GmbH , which also organizes the Munich Film Festival . Diana Iljine has been the festival director and managing director since 2011 .

Film schools from all over the world submit current productions by their students every year, which are viewed by a jury of experts. The selected short films run in competition and are presented personally by the filmmakers. They compete for lavish prizes, which are decided by an independent festival jury chaired by a jury president. The previous jury presidents have included filmmakers such as Philip Gröning , Götz Otto , Marco Kreuzpaintner , Sebastian Schipper , Hans Steinbichler , Michael Ballhaus , Roland Emmerich , Wim Wenders and Bernd Eichinger .

Several winners of famous film festivals, such as Lars von Trier (later winner of the Golden Palm in Cannes), Maren Ade or Thomas Vinterberg , Oscar winners such as Nick Park , Caroline Link , Jan Svěrák and Florian Gallenberger showed their first works as film students at this festival . Renowned German directors such as Sönke Wortmann , Marcus H. Rosenmüller , Rainer Kaufmann and Detlev Buck presented their films to a large audience for the first time in Munich.
