Jan Svěrák (born February 6, 1965 in Žatec , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech film director , actor and screenwriter.

Jan Svěrák is considered to be the most successful Czech film director since the Velvet Revolution in 1989. He is the son of the Czech screenwriter and actor Zdeněk Svěrák . His films have won several internationally recognized film awards. In 1989, his film Die Ölfresser won the Student Oscar in the Honorary Foreign Student Film Award category. In 1992 his film Die Volksschule was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best foreign language film . In 1997 his film Kolya received an Oscar in the same category.
