Kooky ( Czech Kuky se vrací , literally “Kooky comes back”, a reference to Lassie Come Home ) is a Czech film by Jan Svěrák from 2010. The film combines puppetry , stop-motion and real film . On two levels, it tells the stories of a six-year-old boy suffering from asthma and his red teddy bear "Kooky" that has come to life .

content

The boy, who suffers from asthma and is named in the film, is persuaded by his mother to throw away some broken and old toys, including his favorite stuffed animal Kooky. In the boy's imagination, the teddy bear comes to life and at the last second is able to flee from the landfill on which it landed. Convinced that he doesn't belong here, he embarks on an adventurous journey home through a fairytale forest. There he meets a wide variety of fantastic creatures from nature, such as the friendly “Captain von Hergot”, the guardian of the forest, and Anuška, who wants to become the new guardian through intrigues.

backgrounds

Svěrák originally planned a film that would show the world from the point of view of a dog surviving a flood. He changed his plans after telling parts of the story to his son Ondřej.

The film was inspired by the work of the Czech sculptor and draftsman František Skála , who declined to work. Jakub Dvorský, the founder of the Czech game developer Amanita Design, was involved in the technical development and the visual effects . During post-processing , Svěrák and his team concentrated on removing the sticks and cords that were used to move the figures and vehicles. Kooky is Svěrák's most technically complex film. It contains three times more visual effects than Dark Blue World , the most expensive Czech film production to date. The budget for Kookie was 40 million Czech crowns .

The winter scenes were shot in Ještěd , some forests near Bechyně and in the Voděradské bučiny National Park and the sandstone cliffs in Drábské světničky . Production started in the fall of 2008. The shooting time was scheduled to be 35 days, but due to difficulties it took 100 days.

publication

Kooky was selected as the official Czech entry for the 45th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and won the Special Jury Prize.

The film was part of the Humble Botanicula Debut in April 2012 on the occasion of the debut of the adventure Botanicula by the Czech game developer Amanita Design , who was involved in the making of the film.
