Drábské světničky is a rock castle in the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj).

description

The castle complex was built at an unknown time on a complex of seven sandstone rocks northeast of Mnichovo Hradiště . 18 rooms were carved directly into the rock walls. In addition, remains of seven wooden buildings, six bridges and five staircases are proven. The castle had three defense towers and a palisade fortification. In addition to fortifications, living quarters and storage rooms, a chapel was identified in 1921. A room carved deep into the rock is often called a dungeon. But it is more likely to be seen as a granary.

history

So far, no written evidence about the castle and its inhabitants has been found. Not even the contemporary name is known. The current name is probably derived from the old Czech word drápat (hew, chisel).

The archaeological exploration of the place began in 1888 with Josef Ladislav Píč, an employee of the Prague National Museum. Although the rocky heights in the vicinity had been inhabited since the Neolithic Age, a constant human presence on the castle grounds could only be proven for the second half of the 13th century. However, the actual foundation of the fortifications is mostly set at the beginning of the 15th century and attributed to the Hussites , who with the castle would have created an almost impregnable base on the Iser by the state of weapon technology at the time . After the Battle of Lipan in 1434, the Hussites are said to have left the place. The presumably Catholic character of the chapel with a reliquary carved in stone speaks against this. Two younger rooms from the 17th century show that they were occasionally used as emergency quarters during the Thirty Years' War .

The facility can be visited and has become a popular destination, but this has a negative effect on its state of preservation. The rooms embedded in the soft sandstone are exposed to increasing erosion. For this reason, a 16 m² model of the castle on a scale of 1:17 was made as early as 1950 and is located in the city museum in Mnichovo Hradiště.
