Robert Mushet was born in 1811, the youngest of eight children of Agnes Wilson and the well-known metallurgist and entrepreneur David Mushet. His middle name Forester , which he received after his birthplace (Forest of Dean), he rarely used. In 1845 he took over the management of Darkhill Ironworks from his father . In 1876 he received the Bessemer Gold Medal named after Henry Bessemer . He died in 1891 at the age of 79, leaving behind a wife, daughter Mary and two sons, Henry Charles Brooklyn and Edward Maxwell.

Services

In 1848 he began to experiment with fried iron . In 1856 he received a steel sample that had been produced by Henry Bessemer's method, which at the time could not yet deliver a usable quality. The combination ultimately led to a significant improvement in the Bessemer-Mushet process and the industrial use of manganese .

In 1857, Mushet was the first to produce railroad tracks from steel instead of cast iron , which significantly extended their durability.

In 1861 he improved steel casting using a hot topping process that he called Dozzle .

In 1868 he invented Robert Mushet's Special Steel (RMS) , the first tool steel . This alloy also contained tungsten .
