Botanicula is a point-and-click adventure from the Czech development studio Amanita Design . The game was released on April 19, 2012 for Windows , macOS, and Linux .
Botanicula won the European Games Award for the best adventure game as well as the INDIE CADE Design Award and many other prizes.
History and Development
Botanicula was first published on April 19, 2012 for Microsoft Windows , macOS and Linux . On May 1, 2014, a port for iOS and Android was also released. The game was developed by the Czech studio Amanita Design . Founder Jakub Dvorský was in charge of development, while Jaromír Plachý was responsible for the design. The music and the sounds for the game were composed by the Czech band DVA . The game technology was implemented entirely in Adobe Flash .
In 2012 Botanicula was named Game of the Year in the Mac App Store . The subsequent project by Amanita Design is the comedy adventure game CHUCHEL (2018).
Course of the game
As in the previous Amanita Design games, in Botanicula you play one or more characters with whom you explore the landscape, solve puzzles and collect objects that you have to use to overcome the obstacles in the game. The player can interact with the characters in the game world and find cards that show the individual living beings in the game. As in Machinarium, there is no spoken or written dialogue in the game.

In Botanicula, the player takes part in the adventure of five botanical characters named Mr. Latern , Mr. Twig , Mr. Poppy Head , Mr. Feather and Mrs. Mushroom . They try to save the last seed of their home tree from a malicious parasite that has overgrown their home.
Characters
- Mr. Lantern - The main character of Botanicula is a small orange creature, which is a flower of a Cape gooseberry . He can ingest semen with his body. That makes him strong and he shines.
- Mrs. Mushroom - The second character in the shape of a mushroom is the only female character in the group and can both create identical copies of himself as well as shrink.
- Mr. Poppyhead - The toughest and third character in the game is a poppy seed pod .
- Mr. Twig - Another character in the game is in the shape of a branch and has many arms that he can extend. He also has the ability to grow flowers.
- Mr. Feather - The last character in the game is very small but can fly.

The game received mostly positive reviews from critics. The music, the excellent art design and the gameplay were praised.
A short playing time and a low replay value were criticized .
Awards
Botanicula won the 14th annual award in “ Excellence in Audio” at the Independent Games Festival 2012 and was awarded the Story / World Design award from IndieCade (international festival of independent games ). The game also received a European Games Award 2012 in the category “ Best European Adventure Game ” . It was named the best Czech video game in the Czech Booom competition. It received the Czech Video Game of the Year award at Anifilm 2012 in recognition of its contribution to the Czech artistic video game industry.
