The elementary school (original title: Obecná škola ) is a 1991 Czech-Slovak film directed by Jan Svěrák . The film was nominated for an Oscar in 1992 in the category of Best Foreign Language Film .

action

The script was written by Zdeněk Svěrák , the director's father, and was based on his memories. The film takes place in the immediate post-war period of 1945 and 1946. The story is told from the perspective of ten-year-old Eda. Eda lives with his friend Tonda, who is the same age, in a village outside of Prague . Her school class is driving the teacher at her school to quit. The teacher is replaced by the strict teacher Igor Hnízdo, who portrays himself as a womanizer and anti-fascist , but is an impostor.

criticism

The lexicon of international film assesses the elementary school as:

“An ironic, weird retrospective of childhood that empathetically adopts the point of view of a ten-year-old; at the same time an interesting contribution to the topic of authority and seducibility. "

useful information

The film, based on the memoirs of his father, was Jan Svěrák's debut as a director and earned him a nomination for an Oscar in 1992. The film is the beginning of a long collaboration between father and son, which resulted in several feature films and a documentary about the father. Together with Kolya (for whom Jan Svěrák finally received the Oscar) and Leergut , the film is considered a trilogy of ages .

With the film Barefoot over the stubble field , Jan Svěrák shot a prehistory of the elementary school in 2017 , which takes place at the time of the German occupation during the Second World War .
