Karel Kachyňa (1990)

Karel Kachyňa (born May 1, 1924 in Vyškov ; † March 12, 2004 in Prague ) was a Czech director and screenwriter who occasionally appeared as an actor.

Life

Kachyňa was one of the first to graduate from the FAMU Film School in Prague in 1951 . Together with Vojtěch Jasný he made documentaries and feature films before he made his directorial debut in 1956 with The Lost Track . Many of Kachyňa's films were made in collaboration with the screenwriter Jan Procházka .

Kachyňa belonged to the generation of liberal directors in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s, including Miloš Forman and Jiří Menzel . Often, Kachyňa's films depict the psychological problems of young people.

Awards

In 1964, at the Locarno International Film Festival, Kachyňa received the Vela d'Argento in the category “Best Film Debut” for Afternoon in the Park . In 1971 he was awarded the Silver Shell at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia-San Sebastián for his film And Again I Jump Over Puddles . In 1990 Das Ohr from 1970 ran in competition at the Cannes Film Festival .
