Jan Tříska (born November 4, 1936 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ; † September 25, 2017 there ) was an American - Czech actor .

biography

Jan Tříska studied acting at the theater faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague from 1955 to 1959 . He then became the youngest member of the Prague National Theater and played a small role in the drama Alarm im Schacht, directed by Otakar Vávra . During his studies he worked occasionally as an extra in film and as an assistant in the theater. He later founded the Divadlo za branou theater together with Otomar Krejča , Karel Kraus , Josef Topol and Marie Tomášová . Until he signed Charter 77 , Tříska was regularly employed as an actor in theater and film. He then had to leave the country and immigrated to the United States via Cyprus .

From 1981 he played regularly in US films. Thanks to his acquaintance with Miloš Forman , he starred in his 1981 film Ragtime and later as a killer in the biography Larry Flynt - The Naked Truth . He was also able to establish himself as an actor in Hollywood. He did not visit Czechoslovakia again until the late 1980s and subsequently also starred in Czech films. He lived in Los Angeles with his wife, the actress Karla Chadimová , with whom he had two children .

He was nominated three times for the Czech film award Český lev . For his performances in Řád (1994) and Horem pádem (2004) he was nominated as Best Supporting Actor and for his performance in Šílení (2005) as Best Actor .

Jan Tříska fell from Charles Bridge in Prague on September 23, 2017 at the age of 80 and died of the consequences a day later.
