Otakar Vávra
Otakar Vávra (born February 28, 1911 in Königgrätz , Austria-Hungary , † September 15, 2011 in Prague ) was a Czech film director , dramaturge and educator .
Life
As a student of architecture, he was involved in the shooting of several documentaries in 1929/1930. Vavra dedicated over fifty years of his life to Czech film. He first wrote scripts before shooting his first full-length sound film Kamel durch das Nadelöhr (Velbloud uchem jehly) together with the director Hugo Haas in 1936 . In 1937 the first self-directed film Philosophical History (Filosofská historie) followed. Historical films with elaborate costumes were ultimately the focus of his work. Another genre he dedicated himself to were lyrical strips, full of deep feelings and passion.
Vavra always tried to find famous actors for his films who corresponded to the historical figures. After 1945 Vavra taught as a lecturer and since 1963 as a professor at FAMU in Prague.
