Hugo Haas
Hugo Haas (born February 19, 1901 in Brno , Austria-Hungary ; died December 1, 1968 in Vienna ) was a Czech actor , director , screenwriter and producer .
Life
Hugo Haas was born in Brno in 1901 in a Jewish family as the son of the shoemaker Zigmund Haas and his wife Olga, born in Odessa. Epstein, born, the composer Pavel Haas was his brother. After his school days, during which he also received singing lessons, he played at the National Theater in his hometown. Later he also played on the stages in Ostrava and Olomouc . From 1925 Haas was an actor at the National Theater in Prague and also appeared in three silent films .
In the 1930s, Haas established himself as an actor in popular comedies such as Muži v offsidu (1931), Dobrý voják Švejk (1931), Život je pes (1933) or Ať žije nebožtík (1935). Still active as an actor, Haas made his debut as a director in 1936 with the comedy Velbloud uchem jehly .
A year later, Haas directed the anti-fascist film Bílá nemoc , based on a play by Karel Čapek . In it he played the leading role of Dr. Galen. In 1939 Haas was dismissed from the Prague National Theater because of his Jewish origins and emigrated to the United States via France , Spain and Portugal ; Lída Baarová had provided him with the necessary papers . His father and brother Pavel were murdered by the National Socialists. From 1944 he played characters from different nations in Hollywood in supporting roles.
From 1950 Haas worked in Hollywood as a director and producer, but staged little-noticed B-movies . His best work is probably the noir drama Lizzie (1957) with Eleanor Parker in the lead role. His last film work (direction, script, production, leading actor) in the USA was the autobiographical drama Paradise Alley (1962). Haas returned to Europe in the early 1960s. After a short stay in Italy, he moved to Vienna in 1961, where he sometimes played for television. However, he only visited his old homeland once again: in 1963, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of its founding, he visited the Czechoslovak National Theater.
Haas died in Vienna on December 1, 1968 and is buried next to his mother in the Jewish cemetery in Brno . In 2000 Haas was posthumously made an honorary citizen of the city of Brno. His son, Ivan Haas (1939–1969) died young and was also buried in the family grave in Brno.
