The original Appenzeller Streichmusik Alder from Urnäsch in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden , which still exists today, was founded in 1884 by the brothers Ulrich and Johannes Alder.

The Alder brothers started a genre of music that is widespread in the Appenzellerland today and is also played in the Toggenburg region . The typical instruments of string music are the dulcimer , the violin , the cello and the bass violin . The accordion and piano are often used today . The formation includes / belonged to Ueli Alder († 2014), double bass; Hansueli Alder, violin; Jakob Freund, dulcimer; Hansjürg Freund, accordion and Hansueli Wälte, yodel.

The string music Alder performed internationally and had many appearances at music festivals such as the Jazz Festival Montreux , the Music Festival in Atlanta, the OpenAir St. Gallen or the Gurten Festival . In 2003 they received the Prix Walo in the folk music category.

In 2007, as part of the television program “ The Biggest Swiss Hits ”, the formation dared to undertake a project together with rapper Bligg : The title Volksmusigg - originally only in rap version - was revised and performed together with Bligg. The project was so successful that the title made it into the top 10 in the Swiss charts between November 2007 and April 2008.

There are other formations from the Alder dynasty: z. B. «Alder-Buebe» and young formation «Alder». These two formations are often confused with the "Original Alder String Music".
