The show was about the most popular music hits of the past decades among German-speaking Swiss audiences. Every spring, Swiss television put a large number of titles on the Internet based on input from radio stations, media partners or SUISA . Anyone could listen to the tracks and cast their vote. The programs were put together on the basis of this audience survey. The winners of the individual programs were determined by televoting. There were titles to choose from from such diverse genres as country music , hits , rock and pop music to hip-hop .

There were other musical performances in the supporting program. In the 2007 season there were surprising comebacks; Krokus , for example, found their way back to the original line-up, as did Peter, Sue & Marc for an appearance on the show. In a section called “Hitbox”, celebrities comment on old film clips.

Partner broadcasters were two radio programs of the then Swiss radio DRS , the DRS Musikwelle (folksy) and DRS 3 (rock / pop).

"The greatest Swiss hits" were originally planned as a one-off chart show. The success with the general public led to further seasons to follow. The editorial team included the first three winning titles in a “ Hall of Fame for Swiss Popular Music”.
