Adrian Stern (born March 22, 1975 in Zurich ) is a Swiss singer and songwriter from Baden , who sings in the Ostaargau dialect (similar to Züritüütsch ).

Life

Stern was born in Zurich and grew up in Baden to the west of it . In his childhood he lived in the USA for two years. Stern became enthusiastic about music early on. The first attempts with flute and ukulele were not very promising. In 1985, at the age of ten, he saw the film Back to the Future . In the final sequence of the film, Marty McFly plays a wild guitar solo. Then Stern decided to become a guitarist. His father gave him his first electric guitar for Christmas. He tinkered the missing guitar amplifier from an old radio. Through his guitar teacher Werner Amman, Stern came into contact with rock and blues. He learned to improvise and how to play songs by ear. David Gilmour from Pink Floyd , Santana , Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan were his great role models. At the end of the district school in Baden, Stern founded a band together with students and a teacher. Because a singer was missing, Stern decided to take over the vocals. At the Baden Cantonal School, Stern and friends founded the band el bleu . There I wrote my first own English songs. The band reached the semifinals of the Volksbankrock competition and released a demo tape with three songs. The song Nic Bamforth , the text of which his father wrote after reading an interview with the AIDS sufferer Nick Bamforth, was portrayed on Swiss television as part of a youth program on World AIDS Day.

Musical career

After the canton school and a short detour to the university, Stern tried the jazz school in Bern , but after a short time switched to the jazz school in Lucerne, which was known for being a little more open to music styles outside of jazz. While at JSL, Stern formed his second band Speedpop . The band only existed for a short time, released a demo with five songs and was able to play as a career highlight at the Off-Festival of the Montreux Jazz Festival . Stern lived in a musicians' flat share in Lucerne for four years. A roommate gave him the idea of singing his own songs in his native Swiss German. Fascinated by the singing sound of the Swiss language, Stern decided to complete a demo that he had produced entirely himself, with exclusively his own songs, and send it to record companies. The demo met with great interest. Music distribution, Warner and Sony Music offered Stern a contract. Stern signed with Sony Music, worked on other songs and made his first solo appearances with his new dialect songs.

star

In 2003, Adrian Stern released his debut album Stern , which made it a huge hit in the Swiss charts. The song Ha nur welle know… became an airplay hit and the accompanying video was awarded two Edis . In 2004 he got a Viva- Comet as the best Swiss newcomer.

S'Blue from the sky

In 2005 his second album S'Blaue vom Himmel was released , which basically corresponded to the rocking sound of the first album, but expanded it with a softer note. The first single Alles was du wotsch also became an airplay hit. The album made it into the top 5 of the album charts and established him as a serious Swiss dialect singer, although he had to struggle with the fact that certain dialects in Switzerland are unpopular in other parts of the country. In 2005 he received the Prix Walo for the best pop / rock album in 2005.

Dear songs

Stern recorded most of his third album Lieber Lieder in the USA. Together with producer Thomas Fessler, drummer Michael Urbano and sound engineer Reto Peter, the album's basic tracks were recorded in just six days in Studio 880 in Oakland. The material sounded much more acoustic, the rocking guitar boards disappeared. Back in Switzerland, when Sony advised that the album was missing a hit, Stern recorded two more songs with Fessler and drummer Simon Kistler. Among them was the title song Lieber Lieder . The album was released in 2008, also entered the top 10 and made it into the Swiss single charts for the first time with two songs. Dear Lieder , a humorous, tongue-in-cheek song about family and career, was not understood correctly by all listeners and Stern later often played the song as a solo version with a jazz arrangement in order to free it from the all too loose flaky feeling.

Early cleaning solo tour

At the Swiss Music Award 2009 Adrian Stern came into contact with the producer Roman Camenzind . The two decided to do something together. Camenzind helped Stern focus even more on storytelling with acoustic guitar. Over a period of over a year, 24 new songs were created, which Stern only recorded with acoustic guitar. Before he recorded his fourth album in the Hitmill Studio in Zurich in summer 2010, Adrian Stern decided to go on a tour with solo concerts. 14 concerts in small locations were played, the repertoire consisted of tried and tested own songs in a new acoustic guise, favorite songs (including Desperado from the Eagles) and new, never heard songs (including No. 1 and America). The tour was a complete success. The highlight of the evening was a song practiced during the break and previously requested by the audience, which Stern premiered as the last piece of the evening. The 14 covers included Mensch by Herbert Grönemeyer , Fix Me by Coldplay , but also Ein Stern (... that bears your name) .

heart

The album Herz was released in autumn 2010 and became a huge success. Music and lyrics had matured. The album landed at number 2 in the charts, the single America reached number 4. After a few weeks, the album reached gold status and in 2011 even platinum status. Several concerts were sold out. In times of dwindling budgets, Stern decided to create his own music videos. The video clip for No. 1 was created with a small camera attached to the bike . The second single, No. 1, also became an airplay hit. Adrian Stern won the Swiss Music Award for the best album Pop / Rock National 2010 and shortly afterwards his second Prix Walo in the “Pop / Rock” category. America was one of the most played songs on German-speaking Swiss radio in 2010/2011.

JRZ

In 2011 Adrian Stern wrote the title song for the SRF show Every Rappen Counts . In February 2012, allegations were raised that it was a plagiarism of the song Mother by the French band Cocoon. Stern called the song, next to Fabio Greda's book Crocodiles swim in the sea , as a source of influence for his song. The song has sound aesthetic similarities, but differs significantly from the song by Cocoon in harmony, melody, sequence and content. Experts then refrained from further investigating the allegation.
