Ranking show

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ranking shows are a television format that presents certain topics according to a ranking (“ranking”).

Content and story

For once, this format does not have a model on US television, but rather ranking shows began in Germany in May 2003 with the series “ The Ultimate Chart Show ”. Sat.1 responded in November 2003 with the similarly conceived show “ Die Hit-Giganten ”. The content of this format is a specific topic (like pop music in hit parade form ), which is processed according to a given criterion (" summer hits ") and presented in the countdown format. The decisive factor is the order in which the hits are presented. The chart shows are based on hit parades from Media Control or Nielsen Media Research , but otherwise they are based on random viewer surveys ("votes") by telephone , Internet or email or by selecting and placing the editorial staff responsible for the production are not representative.

In the episode “The ten most spectacular celebrity bankruptcies” ( RTL ; July 2008) it was not clear which facts the ranking was based on. Most of the time, no contributions are produced specifically for the ranking shows, but archive material that is processed for the broadcast format is used. This makes production of the format extremely inexpensive compared to other prime-time shows . Characteristic are the celebrities who are placed in the picture using computer technology and who contribute their own experiences, opinions and memories on the topic.

The private television company RTL Television started in May 2003 with The Ultimate Chartshow ; The 10 ... with Sonja Zietlow (January 2005) has now achieved cult status. This was followed by "The 100 Most Annoying Popsongs", "... Germans", "... VIPs Worldwide", and finally numerous adaptations (e.g. The "100 Most Annoying Germans 2004", "... 2005"). Due to its success and the low production costs compared to other formats, other broadcasters, including public television , took up the genre; the third television programs have now reacted and present hit lists of the north ( NDR ; December 2004) or "hit lists of the west" ( WDR ; 2008).

International

In 2010 Hedebyborna ("the villagers of Hede"; since October 1978) was named the best Swedish television series of all time in a ranking show . The ORF has been broadcasting “Austria chooses” since February 2011 , while “Gipfelstürmer” (October 2012) was the first ranking show in Switzerland . In the USA , "Scandal For Real: The Top 10 Political Scandals of the Country" with the ten largest political scandals followed late ( ABC ; November 2013) and with only 2% market share in the advertising-relevant target group became a flop .

criticism

Ranking shows that are based on audience votes, such as "The 100 most annoying ..." and "Our best ...", only reflect a non-representative level of opinion. The circle of voters is limited to a certain interested group of people and a narrow time window, so that random results are likely. As a result, there are often deviations from the average opinion of the general public in ranking shows.

For example, Daniel Küblböck achieved 16th place in " Our Best ". This may not have corresponded to the prevailing public opinion, since it was about people of world historical importance. " 30,000 viewers took part in the vote for" Our best - comedians & Co. ", " ZDF is quoted as saying. In shows like the “100 most annoying ...” it can also be observed that people, television programs and pop songs of the latest events are ranked far higher than older ones, which is due to the higher degree of awareness and the higher media presence.

The two-part ZDF ranking “ Germany's Best! “Revealed the most spectacular manipulation to date. The editors manipulated the survey results in a targeted manner and subsequently downgraded six celebrities and three people down so that they could be invited to the show. The intervention was most extreme with Franz Beckenbauer , because it rose from 31st place to 9th place. As a consequence, the ZDF entertainment manager resigned and 2 employees were warned .

Examples

  • The Hit-Giganten was broadcast on Sat.1 from November 2003 to December 2010 and was conceptually and in terms of content similar to the aforementioned “Ultimate Chart Show”.
  • The 100 most annoying ... has been broadcast by ProSieben since 2003 and includes the creation of a "negative voting" to determine the most unpopular Germans, pop songs, etc. The idea for this program comes from the British television show 100 Worst Britons .
  • Our best is a ZDF program that aims to find the best German, book, athlete, etc.
  • The 10… is a ranking show broadcast regularly by RTL , in which a list of ten places for a specific topic is published. In contrast to other programs of this type, the range of topics is very broad.
