Linda Purl (born September 2, 1955 in Greenwich , Connecticut ) is an American actress and singer . She gained fame primarily as the blind slave girl Nydia in the TV series " The Last Days of Pompeii " and as Charlene Matlock in the television series of the same name .

life and career

Linda Purl was born in 1955 to an actor and Broadway actress. At the age of five, her family moved to Japan , where she was the only foreigner studying at Toho Geino Academy . During this time Purl was seen in various plays at the Imperial Theater in Tokyo . She played the role of Louis in The King and I and the role of Helen in The Miracle Worker . She returned to the United States at the age of 15 and attended a private school for girls specializing in the creative and performing arts . After attending Finch College in Manhattan , she went to England to study under Marguerite Beale . After completing her studies, she returned to the United States to continue her education at the Lee Strasberg Institute . She was in various television roles, such as Ashley in the series Happy Days or, as already mentioned, Charlene Matlock in Matlock .

Purl was married a total of four times: from 1980 to 1981 with Desi Arnaz Jr. , from 1988 to 1992 with William Broyles Jr. and from 1993 to 1999 with Alexander Cary , who is the father of her son. She has been married to James Vinson Adams since July 2006 . Through her marriage to Desi Arnaz Jr., she was the daughter-in-law of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball and the sister-in-law of Lucie Arnaz .

After Matlock, Purl started a career as a jazz musician and released several albums, such as Out of This World - LIVE and Taking a Chance on Love . She is involved in charity work, for example with the AIDS project Los Angeles, the "Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation", Haven House and the "Cystic Fibrosis Foundation".
