Major Crimes is an American crime series and spin-off from The Closer starring Mary McDonnell as Captain Sharon Raydor. The first broadcast in the USA was on August 13, 2012 on TNT and the German-language first broadcast on September 12, 2013 on ATV .

In January 2017, the series was extended by a sixth and final season, consisting of 13 episodes. The series finale aired on January 9, 2018.

action

After Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson leaves Major Crimes and the LAPD , Captain Sharon O'Dwyer Raydor takes over the division. This causes some problems; especially Lt. Provenza is having a hard time accepting its new boss. After saying goodbye to Johnson, he had temporarily headed the department and expected a permanent promotion. Since he thinks little of Raydor, he asks Taylor for a transfer. However, he tells him in no uncertain terms that he only has two options: stay or retire.

In The Closer as part of the criminal investigation, the questioning of witnesses and perpetrators was the focus. As a specialist in interrogation technology, Johnson was tasked with getting the perpetrators to a full confession that would stand up in court. A new concept was developed for the spin-off. In order to avoid unnecessarily long and expensive procedural costs, the perpetrators are offered mitigating deals in the case of a comprehensive confession, which bring them directly to prison.

The major crimes team is initially not very enthusiastic about this new instruction. Unlike Johnson, Raydor rarely appears at the crime scenes and is rarely actively involved in the arrest. Johnson was an impulsive, slightly eccentric boss in The Closer , Raydor is the exact opposite. She is very careful about compliance with the regulations, she always seems to be in control and has her emotions perfectly under control.

The emotional life of the boss, who is always in control, is illuminated by the 16-year-old homeless teenager Rusty Beck, who is under police protection as a witness in a murder case. His story runs parallel to the falls. Police work is also presented from the perspective of a witness. Raydor takes Rusty in temporarily until his mother is found. Little by little she develops maternal feelings for the boy, but always tries to keep distance.

After Rusty's mother is finally found but disappears on the way to Los Angeles, Rusty's stay with Raydor is extended indefinitely. Placement with his biological father, who can be found through Rusty's DNA , is also out of the question. After brutally beating his son, Raydor and the Major Crimes team get him to renounce his parental rights and hand Rusty over to the state as a ward . Raydor takes on Rusty's guardianship in the final episode of season 1.

In the second season, the new prosecutor Emma Rios Rusty makes life difficult. She doesn't like the fact that a police officer is his guardian because it could question his credibility as a witness in court. When Rusty's life and later Sharon Raydor's life are threatened by an anonymous letter writer, she wants to place him in the witness protection program. Since Rusty would never see his mother again and would have to leave Raydor, he is vehemently against it. Raydor also tries everything to keep him out of the witness protection program. In order to finally enable Rusty a life without police protection, Sharon agrees to his insistence to use him as part of a police operation to catch the letter writer. The psychological assessment required for this is created by Dr. Joe Bowman (Bill Brochtrup), who later also played an important role as Rusty's therapist and chess partner.

In the course of further investigations against the anonymous letter writer, it emerges that Philip Stroh commissioned the letters and the murder of Rusty or Sharon from prison. When the killer he hired was arrested, he took a young hostage and threatened to shoot her. Provenza kills the killer with an aimed headshot. This is a great relief for Rusty because he doesn't have to testify as a witness in a second murder case. In the unused scenes for this episode, it turns out that Provenza and Sanchez had agreed on the outcome of the arrest. Provenza says to sniper Sanchez "You know what to do" while preparing for the mission.

In season 3, Rusty meets his mother again, who is on a drug rehab in LA. After she lies and betrays him several times, he turns away from her disappointed. Sharon is considering adopting Rusty and therefore has to deal with her husband. The two have lived separately for over 20 years, their daughter Emily and son Ricky, Sharon raised alone. Jack Raydor (played by Tom Berenger) is a lawyer with alcohol problems and also a gambler with constant money problems. The first time he appears in season 2 and nests temporarily with Sharon.

Since wearing a wedding ring had professional advantages for Raydor, she has not yet divorced Jack, although their relationship has long since ended. But when she wants to adopt Rusty and Jack is against it, she gives him the choice of signing the adoption papers or the divorce papers. Son Ricky, who comes to visit, is also not very happy that she wants to adopt Rusty and tries to dissuade her. However, Raydor manages to ease the tension between Ricky and Rusty and eventually welcomes Rusty as "the little brother he never wanted". After the divorce is over, she adopts Rusty. Raydor's daughter meets Rusty a little later for Christmas.

The problem of Rusty's testimony against Philip Stroh also runs through season 3. Stroh has fired his lawyer and is now preparing his own defense. As part of his preparations, he may process his files under the supervision of a judge. He kills him in the last episode of the season and is able to escape. So Rusty's life will also be threatened in season 4.

Sharon Raydor is also granted a tender romance. When Flynn refuses to go to his daughter's wedding because of an argument with his ex-wife, Sharon offers to accompany him. When asked how he should introduce her, she suggests as "his girlfriend Sharon". She also accompanies him to a ballet performance by his grandchildren. Since Flynn's family has responded positively to Sharon, he lets them believe that they are a couple. Towards the end of season 2, you can tell that Flynn's feelings for Sharon are increasing, which confuses him and makes Provenza desperate when he tries to talk about it.

In season 3, Flynn's daughter Nicole (Torrey DeVitto) embarrasses Sharon when she asks how Sharon and Flynn are coping with being his boss in their relationship. The surprised Sharon demands of Flynn that he explain to Nicole that they are just friends. Flynn explains that he doesn't want to, but she ignores it. When Flynn tries to explain their relationship as friendship the next day after dinner at Sharon's, Rusty saves the situation by telling Nicole that the two of them often eat together or go to the cinema / theater, i.e. have regular dates . And now they want to go to a ballet performance together as a family. As they walk out the door, Sharon explains to Rusty, “We're not dating!” Rusty just grins and says “occasionally”. Sharon then seems to ponder the importance of their dating .

characters

The characters Lt. Provenza , Lt. Flynn , Lt. Tao , Detective Sanchez and Buzz Watson were taken over from The Closer series . Captain Raydor is promoted to head Major Crimes , replacing Deputy Chief Johnson. Commander Taylor is promoted to Assistant Chief . In addition, Dr. Morales continues to be the coroner in charge.

FBI Agent Fritz Howard (Brenda's husband in The Closer) makes a few guest appearances in seasons 1 and 2 when it comes to the LAPD-FBI collaboration. In season 3 he is offered a job as Deputy Chief of the LAPD Special Operation Bureau. Because Brenda has taken a job in Washington and he also wants to do something new, he quits the FBI and moves to the LAPD. However, his new job does not start very well, he suffers a slight heart attack and receives the doctor's recommendation to look for something a little quieter - which he refuses. It is speculated that Major Crimes could get a spin-off with the new investigative team under Fritz Howard.

New in the series are:

Detective Amy Sykes is transferred to her department by Raydor in the first episode. Sykes initially has a bad relationship with Provenza because, in his opinion, she acted wrongly in an operation. Besides, he doesn't like her overzealous demeanor. When she makes full use of her body during an arrest and is injured, she wins his approval.
Rusty Beck is a homeless teenager who made his living on the street after his mother left him. Since he is the main witness in the case against "Philipp Stroh", he remains in the care of the Major Crimes Division, under the supervision of Captain Raydor. He only agreed to stand as a witness and risk his life if Major Crimes investigators found his mother in return. The character "Rusty" is introduced in the last episode of The Closer .
Deputy District Attorney Emma Rios will be introduced as the prosecutor in charge of the Philip Stroh case in Season 2. Her harsh, insensitive interrogation of Rusty and the demand that he be placed elsewhere does not make her very popular with the Major Crimes Team. While the others think little of her, she is adored unsuccessfully by Sanchez. She becomes hysterical at the sight of blood / corpses.
Dr. Joe Bowman is a psychologist and Rusty's therapist. After Sharon has suggested several times that Rusty seek psychological help, she brings him up in season 2 when she demands a psychological assessment before Rusty is allowed to participate in a police operation. Rusty calls on a psychologist who can play chess. After Dr. Joe hits him at the first meeting, accepts him and agrees to further therapeutic meetings later.
Lt. Chuck Cooper of the Undercover Unit made his first appearances in season 2, where he leads the police action against the anonymous letter writer who threatens Rusty's and Sharon's lives. In season 3, he gets closer to Amy Sykes and has a relationship with her.

production
