Mary Eileen McDonnell (born April 28, 1952 in Wilkes-Barre , Pennsylvania ) is an American actress .

Career

McDonnell initially worked in the theater for twenty years and rarely appeared on television. She became known in 1990 for her role as a white man raised by Indians in Kevin Costner's film Dances with Wolves . This earned her nominations for Best Supporting Actress for an Oscar and a Golden Globe . Two years later, McDonnell was nominated again for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her lead role in the drama Passion Fish by John Sayles . In 1996 she played the First Lady in the film Independence Day . For her guest role as Eleanor Carter in the television series Emergency Room , McDonnell was nominated for an Emmy in 2002. From 2003 to 2009 she played the president Laura Roslin in the successful science fiction series Battlestar Galactica . In 2008 she was on the television series Grey's Anatomy with a guest appearance as Dr. Virginia Dixon who has Asperger's Syndrome . From 2009 to 2012 she played the role of Captain Sharon Raydor in The Closer , which she also took on in the spin-off Major Crimes after the series ended .

McDonnell is married to actor Randle Mell. They live with two children (* 1987 and 1993) in Pacific Palisades , a district of Los Angeles .
