Scream 4 ( spelling : SCRE4M ) is an American horror film and the fourth part of the Scream series. The film is the last directorial work by Wes Craven (1939–2015). He also directed the first three parts.

action

Sidney Prescott (main character in the series) is returning to the small town on the 15th anniversary of the Woodsboro massacre as part of a reading tour for her current book. Sheriff Dewey and the journalist Gale (the two "main minor characters") prepare a warm reunion for her. During the stay, Sidney stays with her aunt Kate Roberts and her cousin Jill, who is struggling with her pushy ex-boyfriend, Trevor Sheldon. But as soon as Sidney has arrived, a series of murders begins that imitates the Ghostface murders of 15 years ago. When the cell phone of one of the victims is found in Sidney's trunk, she comes under suspicion of murder and is asked by Dewey to stay in town until the investigation is over.

The murders continue and Sidney and Jill watch as Olivia Morris is murdered in the next house. Shortly afterwards, Sidney's press officer also falls victim to the killer.

Gale Weathers-Riley desperately wants to catch the killer, and since her husband does not want her to help with the case, she teams up with students Robbie Mercer and Charlie Walker. The two are film freaks and think that the killer is trying to surpass the original - he will strike again at a party.

Jill is under house arrest and is not allowed to accompany her friend Kirby to the annual staff film marathon. There, too, Ghostface lurks for new victims. Gale tries to use cameras to monitor the party, but the Ghostface killer appears and turns the cameras to the ground. When Gale goes back to the party, the killer stabs her in the shoulder, but does not kill her.

Then there is an after-party at Kirby Reed's house. Sidney, who has just been attacked by Ghostface, has since learned that Jill has snuck away to Kirby, and is on her way. In Kirby's house are Jill, Kirby, Robbie, Charlie and Jill's ex-boyfriend Trevor, who appears to have shown up uninvited. When Sidney arrives, she finds Robbie Mercer stabbed to death on the porch. In the house, she and Kirby are attacked by Ghostface and flee into the basement. Charlie, who is in the garden, sees the two and asks them to let him in. But you don't trust the boy and have to watch as Ghostface pulls him to a chair and ties him up. Kirby is called by the killer and has to answer questions about horror films so that Charlie is spared. When she thinks she has won the game, she opens the door and frees Charlie. He then reveals himself to be the killer and stabs Kirby. Together with Jill, who is his accomplice, he takes Sidney prisoner and explains that they want to re-enact the Woodsboro massacre and hold Trevor responsible for it. Jill shoots the previously captured Trevor, but also betrays Charlie and stabs him. Then she stabs Sidney until she is apparently dead, wounds herself and is found apparently the only surviving victim of the massacre.

When Jill wakes up in the hospital, she learns that Sidney survived. Jill then tries to kill Sidney again. With the help of Gale, Dewey and Judy Hicks, Sidney manages to outsmart Jill and attacks her with a defibrillator . At first she seems to be lying dead on the floor. When Jill rises again to kill Sidney with a piece of glass, Sidney kills her with a shot in the chest.

background

This part of the horror series was, like Scream! and Scream 2 , written by Kevin Williamson . After a dispute with producer Bob Weinstein , Williamson left the production and they brought in Ehren Kruger , who was already writing Scream 3 . Williamson said in an interview that the change of authors was due to artistic differences.

Neve Campbell , Courteney Cox and David Arquette are returning to their old roles after ten years. After Cox and Arquette signed very quickly, it was long unclear whether Neve Campbell would be on board again. This was against a continuation for a long time, but also signed the contract in September 2009.

The series was originally planned as a trilogy . However, Bob Weinstein thought it was time for a new movie. If the film runs successfully in the cinemas, one would like to keep the option open to form the beginning of a new trilogy with Scream 4 . The film opened in American cinemas on April 15, 2011. The German theatrical release was on May 5, 2011.

Reviews

"Not very successful infusion of the popular horror series, which tries to give the all-too-familiar a special touch through a self-reflective meta-level, but is far too confused and toothless."
