In Death Valley of the Wolves (Original title: The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 ) is an American horror film by Wes Craven , which was released in 1985. It's a direct sequel to Mound of Bloody Eyes .

action

Bobby and Ruby survived the plot of the first part. Both are friends with a motocross clique who want to take part in a race in the desert with their new specialty gasoline. Bobby is severely traumatized and cannot go on the trip. Ruby, who once belonged to the mutant family, is now an integrated member of society and lives in town under the name Rachel. She accompanies the group into the desert. Shepherd Buddy (in the original "Beast"), who already played a major role in the first part, also comes along.

The group is in good spirits when the journey begins, only Rachel has nightmares and premonitions. The drivers suddenly notice that summer time has already started and that they are now running late. So they decide to take a shortcut. Unfortunately they tear a hole in the tank while driving over the scree. The attempt to mend the leak with chewing gum fails, so that after a few miles of driving the fuel tank is empty. They're looking for gasoline at the old mine. On the upper floor of a house, Ruby meets Pluto, who survived Buddy’s bite. In the meantime, the Ripper (in the original: "Reaper") has taken command of the mutants. He and Pluto intercept visitors to the old mill and feed on them. He threatens his sister, but she escapes.

When she tries to warn her friends, she also reveals her identity. Her friends ignore the story, thinking Rachel is hallucinating. When they return to their bus, they notice that one of the motorcycles is missing. Roy and Hulk chase Pluto, the others hide in a nearby barn. One by one, the two mutants become victims. Only the blind Cass and Roy can finally kill the mutants. Together with Buddy they make the long way home through the desert.

background

Wes Craven produced several flops in a row in the 1980s: The Thing from the Swamp and Deadly Blessing failed at the box office, his screenplay for Nightmare was rejected several times. In order to get some money again, he tried a new edition of his first successful film, Hill of Bloody Eyes . During the shooting, however, the participants ran out of money and the film was initially put aside. When Nightmare was a huge success, however, it was decided to bring out the almost finished film. Built-in flashbacks from the original film and several post-shot passages then expanded the film to the length of the feature film.

The German version was released as a VHS tape with the age rating FSK 16 . Bloody passages were removed in several places to achieve this clearance. It was not until 2008, several uncut versions of the film appeared, among others, in a box with the first part and the often referred to as The Hills Have Eyes 3 designated Mind Ripper .

Reviews

The film received mostly poor ratings. The lack of money can be clearly seen in the film, the equipment and costumes are spartan. There are also some gaps in the story. The actors also present a mostly poor performance. In addition, some gaps in the plot and some gaps in the connection to the first part were incorporated into the script. There is no 'ripper' in the original, the story with Bobby from the first part is limited to a few flashbacks. Also, Rachel simply disappears from the movie after being knocked down by Pluto.

"The Hills Have Eyes Part II", published in Germany under the title "In Death Valley of the Wolves", is the dismantling of a classic. Genre icon Wes Craven lost some credit with the loveless sequel, although reference must be made to the difficult conditions under which he launched the film. "

- Handlemedown.de

"Allegedly for the money, the then 46-year-old Craven let himself be carried away to make a sequel to his classic" Hill of Bloody Eyes "- and thus not only delivered the worst film of his career, but also one of the most uninteresting horror films ever. The sequel, which was marketed in Germany under the title "In the Death Valley of the Wolves", is in every respect a cinematic testimony to poverty. "

"A spectacle of violence of the most primitive style, from which the director later distanced himself."
