Music of the Heart is the name of the biographical feature film about Roberta Guaspari .

This film version by Wes Craven is based on the 1995 documentary "Small Wonders", which was nominated for an Academy Award .

action

After their divorce, the violin teacher Roberta tries to earn a living. She is recommended as a music teacher to a school principal ( Angela Bassett ) in East Harlem by her childhood friend Brian .

However, she only got this position after some effort and because she brought 50 violins with her. Despite some skepticism from teachers, parents and children, their "East Harlem Violin Program" is quickly becoming an important institution.

After ten years, the program threatens to end because public funds are cut.

Roberta decides to fight for the continuation and is mainly supported by the photographer Dorothea van Heften, wife of the famous violinist Arnold Steinhardt , who in turn can win colleagues like Isaac Stern and Itzhak Perlman for a benefit event.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote that the “ glossing over the milieu ” and the “ sentimentalization of the events ” would reduce the “ inspirational power of history ”. The presentation by Meryl Streep is " impressive " and " psychologically differentiated ".

Awards

Meryl Streep for Best Actress and Diane Warren for the song Music Of My Heart were nominated for an Oscar in 2000. Meryl Streep was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award in 2000. Diane Warren was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2000.

background

The fundraiser was actually filmed at Carnegie Hall with the artists from back then. There were only 72 hours left for this. Numerous children from Roberta's program took part in the shooting. On the last day of shooting, the crew received a visit from Rudy Crew, the school chancellor of New York , who promised to support Roberta's program again. From 1991 to 1998 the program survived only thanks to private donations. In the meantime, public support from the education authorities has been reintroduced.

Actually, Madonna should have played the part of Roberta, but she canceled due to differences with Wes Craven. Although Meryl Streep couldn't play the violin, she accepted and learned to play the violin in no time, especially for the film.
