Scream 3 is an American horror film of the director Wes Craven in the year 2000 and the third part of the Scream series.

action

Three and a half years after the Woodsboro murders (see part one of the series ), Sidney Prescott is now living in seclusion under a false name. The nightmare seems to start all over again when murders happen on the set of the film "Stab 3", whose predecessor deals with the events of the two previous films within the scream world and which is now supposed to tell a third part that is also fictional for the scream world. During the shooting, the masked killer strikes again and kills one actor after the other.

Ex-police officer Dewey and journalist Gale, the only survivors of the previous murders besides Sidney, are investigating the matter and assisting Detective Mark Kincaid in his investigation. Finally, Sidney also joins in, who wants to put an end to the new nightmare.

While researching the film business, Gale discovers that Sidney's mother Maureen, who was murdered a few years ago, wanted to become an actress as a young woman and ended up as an actress in cheap and dubious film productions.

The big showdown takes place in the villa of the film producer John Milton. The masked killer ruthlessly hunts Sidney, Dewey and Gale. When Sidney comes face to face with the killer, she finally learns the whole truth: Roman Bridger, the director of "Stab 3", is Sidney's half-brother and the result of a rape. In her desperate attempt to gain a foothold in the movie business, Maureen was raped at a party at John Milton's house. When Roman, who was put up for adoption, went to Maureen years later, Maureen wanted nothing to do with him, whereupon he instigated the later Woodsboro killers to do their thing. Now he wants to complete his work by murdering his half-sister Sidney, the only child Maureen has recognized.

But Sidney fights doggedly for her life and can finally ram Roman an ice ax in the back and then stab him in the chest with his knife. Roman remains apparently dead on the floor at first. However, he gets up again, but is shot by Dewey. In the end, Sidney feels safe for the first time in many years. She begins a relationship with Detective Mark Kincaid while Gale and Dewey decide to get married.

Trivia

  • The actor Jamie Kennedy has a short appearance in the third part, in which he - as in the two predecessors - gives "film rules" (here the rules for a trilogy) for the best of the situation, although his character Randy Meeks died in the second part . This obstacle is circumvented by only showing him on one video film in the film. The videotape bears the label Scary Movies 101 , in German about “Basics of Horror Films”.
  • Three different ends were twisted. Not even the actors knew which ending would be used in the film when the film was being shot.
  • At a cost of $ 40 million, the film grossed over $ 160 million worldwide.
  • In 10 days the film had 1 million admissions in Germany alone.
  • In the scene in which Sidney enters the set of her room, a poster of the band Creed hangs on the wall , on which the cover of the album Human Clay is shown next to the band itself . Since this was only released in 2000, it can be assumed that the events for the "film in a film" were moved to 2000.
  • The song What if by the rock band Creed, whose music video is related to the content of the Scream series, can be heard in the opening sequence.

criticism

“The film, which is somewhat retarded in the violent scenes compared to its predecessors, merely copies the well-known set pieces and, in its lack of imagination, does not understand how to build tension or grim humor. What remains is a downright "deadly" boredom for the genre. "
