Courteney Bass Cox (born June 15, 1964 in Birmingham , Alabama ) is an American actress . Her greatest career successes include the television series Friends and the horror film series Scream - Schrei!

Life

Courteney Cox grew up as the youngest of four children in a conservative, affluent family. According to a tradition popular in the American southern states , she bears the maiden name of her mother as a middle name. Her father, Richard L. Cox, was a businessman; he died in 2001. Cox has two sisters and a brother. In 1974 her parents separated. After the divorce, she lived with her mother and stepfather.

After graduating from high school, Cox began studying interior design , but soon left college in favor of a modeling career in New York City . She posed for the covers of smaller magazines and was booked for various commercials . At the same time she took acting lessons . She took her first step into the limelight in 1984 when she selected director Brian De Palma from among a large number of applicants to appear in Bruce Springsteen's video Dancing in the Dark .

Shortly thereafter, she got a leading role in the television series The Specialists on the move , which was discontinued after 16 episodes. In 1987 she starred in the movie Masters of the Universe . That same year, her cast as Michael J. Fox 's friend on the popular sitcom Family Ties saw greater media interest .

After the series ended in 1989, Cox took part in several television films and series, including a guest appearance on the sitcom Seinfeld . In the press, her relationship with the actor Michael Keaton , with whom she was dating from 1989 to 1995, attracted particular attention. She achieved a surprise success in 1994 with the role of Melissa Robinson in the film Ace Ventura - An Animal Detective , which also laid the foundation for the career of her screen partner Jim Carrey .

Cox made her breakthrough on NBC with the role of Monica Geller in the sitcom Friends . Cox saw the original concept as the focus of the series, as it was the only one of the actors who was sufficiently well known. But it quickly became apparent that it was precisely the interplay between the ensemble that made the show so charming. Friends developed into a crowd favorite shortly after its launch in autumn 1994 and overnight made the six main actors stars in their home country. The ten-year series is still very popular outside of the United States.

On the screen, Cox was also successful with the horror tetralogy Scream - Schrei! celebrate, in which she embodied the journalist Gale Weathers . During the filming she met the actor David Arquette , whom she married in 1999. She played with her husband in numerous other productions, such as The Shrink is In and Friends , where David Arquette took on a guest role. In June 2004, Cox had a daughter. In October 2010, Arquette and Cox announced their split. In May 2011, she appeared again on Scream 4 alongside husband David Arquette and Neve Campbell . In June 2012 David Arquette filed for divorce, after a three-year separation phase, the divorce was declared on May 28, 2013.

In the eighth season of the series Scrubs - The Beginners , Cox took over the role of chief physician Dr. Taylor Maddox . From 2009 to 2015 she played the lead role Jules Cobb in the comedy series Cougar Town . She also acted as executive producer on the series. In 2013, Cox made a guest appearance on the television series Go On alongside her longtime Friends colleague Matthew Perry .

In 2010, together with Jennifer Aniston , Ben Stiller , Woody Harrelson and other Hollywood stars , Cox supported the campaign The Cove PSA: My Friend is ... against keeping dolphins in aquariums.

She has been in a relationship with the musician Johnny McDaid since 2014 .
