Dancing in the Dark is a 1984 song by Bruce Springsteen that was both written and produced by him, Jon Landau and Chuck Plotkin.

Origin and content

Dancing in the Dark was the last track recorded for the 1984 album Born in the USA at Hit Factory Studios in New York . The song is about the frustration of the lyrical self , which is not satisfied with the everydayness and hopelessness of his life: he goes to work every evening, comes home tired in the morning, goes to bed, is nothing but tired and suffers from the dullness of his existence . The singer challenges the lyrical you to break out of the lifelessness and lovelessness of the everyday routine ( hey, baby ... ), even if you only dance in the dark .

Publication and Success

The song was released as a single on Columbia Records on May 4, 1984 . In the United States, the piece reached number 2 on the charts. It was Springsteen's first hit since 1981 and the start of a string of top 10 hits. The song became a number one hit in the Netherlands and Belgium, among others . In Great Britain the single reached number 18, after a new release of the single in early January 1985 the title came to number 4. At the 1985 Grammy Awards , the hit won in the category "Best Male Vocal Performance - Rock" ( Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male ) .

Music video

Brian De Palma directed the music video . In the plot, Bruce Springsteen performs the song on a stage in front of a large audience, while he brings a fan, played by Courteney Cox , onto the stage and dances with her. The clip was filmed in June 1984 at the Saint Paul Civic Center, Saint Paul , Minnesota . It was first broadcast on July 10, 1984 on MTV .

The music video won the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards in the Best Stage Performance in a Video category.
