Mary Chapin Carpenter
Mary Chapin Carpenter (* 21st February 1958 in Princeton , New Jersey ) is an American country- and folk music - singer-songwriter .
Life
Mary Chapin Carpenter was born in Princeton, New Jersey in 1958 to a manager and spent part of her childhood in Japan. In 1974 her family moved to Washington, DC , where Carpenter appeared on the local folk music scene. She graduated from Brown University and spent a year in Europe.
Carpenter formed a folk duo with guitarist John Jennings. They performed in Washington clubs and produced some demo tapes. In 1987 Mary Chapin signed a record deal with Columbia Records . Her debut album, Hometown Girl , was released in the same year . The folk-oriented album initially made very little impression on the country scene. But already from the second album, State of the Heart , some singles were released, which reached middle hit parade positions.
She finally gained acceptance as a country singer in 1990 with Shooting Straight in the Dark . The album went gold, and the single Down at the Twist and Shout reached number two on the country charts and earned it a Grammy . In the same year she received the coveted CMA Award Female Vocalist of the Year .
In 1992 came the album Come On, Come On , which reached number 6 on the country charts, went platinum and was voted "Album of the Year" by the CMA. The follow-up album Stones in the Road reached number 1 in the country charts , as did the single Shut Up and Kiss Me .
Mary Chapin Carpenter has won a total of five Grammys so far, including the top ten hit I Feel Lucky , and several CMA and ACM awards. In 2004 she produced her first album in Nashville : Between Here and Gone was recorded with proven session musicians and contains classic country elements. The 2007 album The Calling was released - like the 2010 and 2012 albums - on the indie label Zoe Records and reached number 10 on the US country charts.
Mary Chapin Carpenter was married from 2002 to 2010 and lives on a farm near Charlottesville , Virginia .
