President Evil (Original title: The Tripper ) is the directorial debut of actor David Arquette . The American slasher film was released in 2006.

action

The film opens with a quote from Ronald Reagan :

"A hippie is someone who looks like Tarzan, walks like Jane, and smells like Cheetah"

"A hippie is someone who looks like Tarzan , walks like Jane , and smells like Cheetah ."

1967: Dylan Riggs works as a woodcutter and takes care of his terminally ill wife. Together with his wife and their son Gus, they live in the small town of Carlyle in the Redwood Forest of Northern California . When Dylan wants to go to work with his son, he comes to a demonstration by some hippies who don't want the trees to be felled. Dylan gets mad and goes after the hippies. He is arrested. His son steals a chainsaw and kills the spokesman for the hippies. He is taken to a mental hospital.

Years later: The small town is preparing for the annual "Love Festival", a hippie festival organized by the greedy promoter Frank Baker. Officer Buzz Hall and his minor deputy Muff Cooper are responsible for the safety of the hippies. A difficult task, because Samantha and her friends are harassed by rednecks on the way there . In addition, the festival community seems to consist exclusively of drug users and potheads, who prefer to walk around in close contact with nature. Also, nobody knows: Gus was released from psychiatry after the medical sector cuts that took place under the Reagan administration. It comes as it has to: the first hippie is hung up by his feet and found disembowelled in a bear trap.

Buzz Hall wants to cancel the festival, but he is pressured by the mayor. A jelly bean at the crime scene draws his attention to Dylan Riggs, but the latter denies any responsibility. Meanwhile, two hippies find his large marijuana field. However, a troop of rednecks disrupts the celebration and chases the couple with their paintball guns. However, all of them are taken care of by a killer in a Ronald Reagan mask.

Back at the festival: Samantha is very afraid that her quick-tempered and slightly psychotic ex-boyfriend Jimmy is following her. She looks for support in the group, but finds that everyone is completely stoned or drunk. All of a sudden corpses are found. Buzz wants to break off the festival, but some hippies gather in the forest to demonstrate with a drum dance against the " fascist " actions of the police. When Samantha meets her ex-boyfriend, the Ronald Reagan killer shows up and kills everyone. Samantha escapes and finds herself at the drum festival , where she is promptly sprayed full of LSD and during the drug trip she overhears how the killer slaughters the rest of the festival visitors to the sounds of Reagan Youth .

It finally comes to a showdown between Samantha and Buzz on the one hand and the killer with his dogs on the other. They finally succeed in bringing down the killer: it's Gus Riggs. When the situation calmed down again, Gus's body has disappeared. You can see him killing festival organizer Frank Baker, who was hiding in a Dixi toilet with the cash register the whole time . A political speech against Reagan runs through the credits.

background

The film was supposed to be a contribution to the "After Dark Horror Festival" 2006, but was not finished in time. After Dark Films and David Arquette split amicably. The actor David Arquette made his directorial debut with this film and relied on support from his family. His ex-wife Courteney Cox appears both as a producer and an actor, while his brother Richmond Arquette took on one of the leading roles. The film was shot in the Redwood Forests within 22 days.

To promote the film, David Arquette toured United States cinemas and ran several competitions through the official MySpace site.

The R-rated version was transferred into German for the German DVD evaluation . The film was also cut by around a minute of scenes of violence. Despite the announcement, no German-language unabridged version has yet been published.

Reviews

While the reviews in the home country USA were rather restrained, the film was praised for its refreshingly satirical basic idea.

“The world has never seen an ex-president as a serial killer. With the political satirical horror comedy PRESIDENT EVIL, David Arquette, who can be seen in this flick alongside his wife Courtney Cox (" Friends "), his brother Richmond Arquette ( Zodiac ) and Thomas The Punisher Jane , proves that he is clearly the craziest member of the Arquette clans is. Successful splatter fun not only for genre fans. "
