ingredients

Under their variably colored sugar crust, the beans consist entirely of jelly , contain sugar , corn syrup and corn starch , and beeswax and carnauba wax are used as a coating agent. The other ingredients - flavors and colors - vary according to the variety.

history

Jelly Belly Beans have been made by the Jelly Belly Candy Company (formerly Herman Goelitz Candy Company ) since 1976 , based on an original concept by candy merchant David Klein . In contrast to other jelly beans on the market, the new product should be characterized by two properties and distinguish itself among adult customers: a reduced sugar content as well as flavoring and coloring not only in the sugar crust, but also in the jelly body. In addition, the customer should perceive the aromas as less “industrial”, which is why natural aromas are used wherever possible.

The beans' first outlet was a small ice cream parlor in Alhambra , California. Initially there were only eight flavors, which were gradually added as the product became more popular.

Individual evidence

  1. To celebrate his inauguration, a new variety was created: “When Regan was elected president, arrangements were made for Jelly Bellies to be served at inaugural festivities. There was only one problem. The color scheme for the inaugural was red, white, and blue. There were red, yellow, white, orange, and black Jelly Bellies, but there was not a blue one. Recipes were tested and the blueberry Jelly Belly was developed specifically for Reagan's inauguration. ... While blueberry remains one of the most popular flavors, it was not Reagan's favorite. That honor goes to the black licorice-flavored bean. Source: “ President Ronald Reagan and Blue Jelly Beans ( March 21, 2015 memento in the Internet Archive ).
